Development and Construct Validation of the Basic Psychological Needs Scale for Korean Adolescents：Based on the Self-Determination Theory

Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of kidney transplant recipients is an outcome evaluation after kidney transplants. Therefore, we investigated the associations among perceived health status, social support, self-determination, post-traumatic growth, and kidney transplant recipients’ HRQOL. This study involved a descriptive, self-report survey of 163 kidney transplant recipients visiting an outpatient solid organ transplant center in South Korea. Participants’ general and transplant characteristics, perceived health status, post-traumatic growth, social support, self-determination, and HRQOL were collected. Data were statistically analyzed using the software SPSS version 25.0. HRQOL showed statistically significant positive correlation with perceived health status (r = .56, p < .001), post-traumatic growth (r = .18, p = .022), social support (r = .25, p = .002), and self-determination (r = .36, p < .001). The factors affecting HRQOL were perceived health status (β = 0.47, p < 0.001), post-transplant occupation (β = 0.17, p = 0.009), and income source (β = -0.13, p = 0.046). The explanatory power of these variables was 34.8% (F = 28.81, p < 0.001). In the subdomains of HRQOL, the factors influencing HRQOL of mental component summary were perceived health status (β = 0.45, p < 0.001), self-determination (β = 0.27, p < 0.001), and education level (β = 0.18, p = 0.006). To promote the HRQOL of kidney transplant recipients, an institutional system to assist kidney transplant recipients in returning to work needs to be developed. Additionally, creating an environment that allows kidney transplant recipients to act with self-determination, and developing intervention programs that can enhance self-determination will contribute to enhancing the HRQOL of kidney transplant recipients.

Background: The purpose of this study was to develop and validate the relational need scale. Based on previous studies, we presumed that relational need is comprised of the two independent concepts of approch and avoidance. Methods: The preliminary items were selected through a series of processes and they were analyzed in terms of item content, response distribution and correlations with other measures. Exploratory factor analysis confirmed that approach and avoidance concepts were independent from each other. Results: As a result, the relational need scale was developed, consisting of 6 approach-type items for the relational need subscale and 11 items for the avoidance-type subscale. The two subscales are each subsumed by a one-factor model and a three-factor model, respectively. Specifically, the approachtype subscale has subfactors of 'Intimate relationship tendency,' whereas the avoidance-type subscale has the subfactors of 'sensitivity to others evaluations,' 'sensitive to negative evaluations,' and 'awareness for others.' Conclusions: The internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and criterion-related validity of the scales were found to be adequate. This study revealed that the Korean version of relational need scale is reliable and valid. Finally, implications and limitations of this study and suggestions for future studies are discussed.

AimThis study aimed to examine a hypothetical model of physical activity (PA) and health outcomes related to sarcopenia in women with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) based on self‐determination theory.DesignCross‐sectional study.MethodsThis study included 214 women diagnosed with RA from the outpatient rheumatology department of a university‐affiliated hospital in South Korea. Data were collected from September 2019 to August 2020 through structured questionnaires and anthropometric measurements and analysed using path analysis to test the hypothesized model. The primary health outcomes were perceived health status and sarcopenia‐related health (thigh circumference, handgrip strength and sarcopenia risk).ResultsThe final model's fit indices were adequate. Physical activity was directly affected by motivation for PA, while depression, self‐efficacy for PA, health care provider's autonomy support and basic psychological needs satisfaction indirectly affected PA. Physical activity directly affected perceived health status and thigh circumference, while perceived sarcopenia risk and handgrip strength were directly affected by disease activity and age.Patient or Public ContributionPatients were involved in a questionnaire‐based survey.
