Development and characterization of an FK photovoltaic concentrator for maximum conversion efficiency

Abstract: The outdoor measurements of a single-cell concentrator PV module reaching a regressed 35.6% efficiency and a maximum peak efficiency of 36.0% (both corrected @T cell =25ºC) are presented. This is the result of the joint effort by LPI and Solar Junction to demonstrate the potential of combining their respective state-of-the-art concentrator optics and solar cells. The LPI concentrator used is an FK, which is an advanced nonimaging concentrator using 4-channel Köhler homogenization, with a primary Fresnel lens a… Show more

“…40,42 Outdoors electrical efficiency of 32.0% was measured with this Ventana™ when uses a 39.2% efficient Spectrolab C3MJ+ cell. 43 The FK prototype with SOG Fresnel lens and Solar Junction A-SLAM™ cell using dilute-nitrides (cell efficiency approximately 42.0%), showed a single-cell concentrator maximum peak efficiency of 36.0% and regressed 35.6% efficiency, 43 proximate to the current world record shown in Ref. 29.…”

“…In this way, the concentration is reduced, the acceptance angle is maintained, and relative electrical efficiency is boosted. The proof-of-concept concentrator CFK was developed, 48 and a relative efficiency increase of about 6.0% was measured at 18.45 W∕cm 2 with C3MJ+ solar cells 43 (see Fig. 7).…”

“…Up to date, highest concentrator module efficiency is claimed by Amonix, the Californian concentrated photovoltaics (CPV) specialist, after the NREL measured its 35.9% module efficiency [64]. A single-cell FK module, a Kohler-type concentrator, demonstrated recently measured efficiency values in the same range of 35.3-35.9% (36.00% maximum peak efficiency) [65].…”
