Development and characterization of a poly (vinyl alcohol) and sodium alginate blend foam for wound dressing loaded with propolis and all‐trans retinoic acid

Abstract: Propolis is a complex mixture of phytochemicals, with antibacterial, antiinflammatory, and healing properties. All-trans retinoic acid is implicated in wound healing by stimulating angiogenesis, cell recruitment, extracellular matrix deposition, and reepithelization. The incorporation of both agents to a polymeric wound dressing composed of poly (vinyl alcohol) and sodium alginate may result in improved healing allied to controlled release, fluid uptake, and wound protection. In the present work, we have physi… Show more

“…The rate of release was quick enough to enhance biological processes such as the anti-inflammatory activity. However, the impact was minor compared to typical medications ( Cesar et al, 2021 ). A group of researchers from Iran prepared an electrolytic solution of carboxymethylcellulose, calcium alginate, and New Zealand Manuka propolis, then used it to generate adequate fiber diameters with uniform size distribution ( Asri et al, 2020 ).…”

“…A recent study by Cesar et al evaluated the physical characteristics and release kinetics of a PVA and sodium alginate blend foam for wound dressing loaded with propolis and all -trans retinoic acid ( Cesar et al, 2021 ). Green propolis was purchased in the form of a lyophilized powder from Apis Flora® (Ribeirao Preto, SP, Brazil).…”

“…Different fabric structures allow for different functions, so in some special and complex situations it is necessary to apply multiple fabrics at the same time [85]. Thus, hybrid textiles that are composed of a variety of structural fabrics have emerged.…”

“…For individual wearable cooling devices, air cooling and liquid cooling garments are inconvenient and heavy with bulky air or fluidic channels, and the cooling performance of them is not stable and reliable [83]. Given these intrinsic disadvantages, homeostatic solid-state cooling strategies, such as electrocaloric cooling [84,85], magnetocaloric [86], To achieve significant amelioration of the LCG, combining other cooling technologies with LCGs exhibits remarkable potential in practical usage [55]. Zhang et al reported a novel LCG with TE materials, which considerably alleviates the thermal stress hazard, as shown in Figure 5b [82].…”

“…For enriching the function of alginate fiber dressing, many works have combined alginate with some special therapeutic effects of drugs [ 81 ], various growth factors [ 82 ], metal ions [ 83 ] and polymers [ 84 , 85 ]. For instance, Tang et al [ 86 ] prepared the functional alginate dressing by incorporating quaternized chitosan (hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan) and magnesium (Mg) in the spinning solution to cure diabetic foot ulcers.…”
