Development and assessment of an integrated computer-aided detection scheme for digital microscopic images of metaphase chromosomes

Abstract: The authors developed an integrated computer-aided detection (CAD) scheme for detecting and classifying metaphase chromosomes as well as assessing its performance and robustness. This scheme includes an automatic metaphase-finding module and a karyotyping module and it was applied to a testing database with 200 digital microscopic images. The automatic metaphase-finding module detects analyzable metaphase cells using a feature-based artificial neural network (ANN). The ANN-generated outputs are analyzed by a r… Show more

“…Through our previous studies [11][12][13][14][15] and this study, we have developed and tested a new integrated microscopic image scanning system that has realized the following functions to scan the specimen slides with highspeed, capture the high-resolution analyzable metaphase chromosome images, and select the sharpest images by deleting blurred images. No similar study has been previously conducted.…”

“…A computer-aided detection (CAD) scheme previously developed in our laboratory [13][14][15] was applied to detect and classify between analyzable and un-analyzable image frames and segment potential analyzable metaphase chromosome ROIs. To save disk spaces, only ROIs containing the detected analyzable metaphase chromosomes were saved.…”
