Development and application starch films: PBAT with additives for evaluating the shelf life of Tommy Atkins mango in the fresh‐cut state

Abstract: In this study, formulations of cassava starch and poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) flexible films were developed, with glycerol, coconut nanocellulose, annatto, and citric acid in different concentrations, as well as the effectiveness of the selected materials in fresh-cut mangoes storage was evaluated. The tensile strength of the different formulations varied from 1.90 (E4) to 6.65 MPa (E3c), and the strain varied from 206.31 (E1c) to 278.41% (E8); this variation was dependent on the percentage of the … Show more

“…Active packaging materials composed of TPS and PBAT have already been produced with success, using pinhão (Araucaria angustifolia) extract (da Silva et al 2019b), nisin (Zehetmeyer et al 2016), oregano essential oil (Cardoso et al 2017), annatto (Leal et al 2019), andcurcumin (de Campos et al 2019) as active agents. Curcumin is of particular interest because it is a natural compound extracted from the saffron rhizome (Curcuma longa L.), with a yellow-orange color, that presents remarkable antioxidant activity.…”

“…Several studies have demonstrated that MMT influences the a w in films [71][72][73]; however, Azevedo et al [73] reported that the free water in whey protein isolate films decreased when MMT is incorporated, and only one sample presented higher a w values compared with other samples. mechanical properties of the materials, since the main functional properties (mechanical and barrier properties) of these hydrophilic materials depend on their water content, as previously described in other studies [42,70]. “…The MMT proportions in the BC-MMT composites were 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0%; the samples were labeled as bacterial cellulose BC (sample without MMT), BC-MMT0.5, BC-MMT1, and BC-MMT2, respectively (Table 2). The measurements of water activity (a w ) were performed using a Decagon (Novasina, Lab Master a w , Switzerland) at a temperature of 25 • C. The equipment software applied an equation to evaluate the "actual balance" [a w = moisture in the balance sheet = actual balance (%)/100] [42]. The analyses were performed in triplicate.…”

“…The a w of the pure BC and biocomposites was analyzed in Decagon (Lab Master aw; Novasina; Lachen, Switzerland) at 25 °C using electrolytic cell CM-2. The “actual balance” [a w = moisture in the balance sheet = actual balance (%)/100] was evaluated using the equipment software equation [ 52 ]. All analyses were performed in triplicate.…”
