Development and application of triage and medical evacuation system for casualties at sea

Abstract: Traditional triage could not meet the needs of battlefield casualties’ care in modern warfare. This paper designs of triage and medical evacuation system for casualties at sea that can quickly address mass-casualty triage, and store and transmit medical information during battlefield treatment and medical evacuation. This system consists of a high-capacity medical information card, a simulated patient generator, a triage classifier and a multifunctional airbag triage vest.

“…Resource allocation becomes an important doctrine, given that casualties may overwhelm the treatment capacity of the supporting medical force, necessitating accurate and reliable triage to maximize survivors. Xie et al [8] proposed and successfully tested out a novel triage and medical evacuation system for naval warfare, helping to combat the limitations of existing triage systems and improve on triage efficiency. In the pre-hospital setting, techniques of Tactical Combat Casualty Care are also heavily emphasized and taught to medics entering the combat arena.…”

“…For those urgent or critical casualties who need further medical treatment, it is important to arrange air transport as soon as possible. Forward doctors report the patient’s information to the higher-level hospital before transportation so doctors can prepare efficiently to ensure the continuous treatment after transportation [ 32 ]. Various vehicles (military ships, military planes or civilian ships) should be used to rescue as many lives as possible during war.…”

“…Xie et al 6 present designs of triage and medical evacuation systems for casualties at sea, including the storage and transmission of medical information during battlefield treatment and medical evacuation; their system consists of a medical information card, a multifunctional airbag triage vest and includes a triage classifier. Eastridge et al 7 present a novel triage algorithm that has been offered and evaluated in a combat environment based on Field Triage Score, whereas Jorma and colleagues8 present field experiences using a mobile radio frequency identification-based triage system.…”
