Development and Application of Phased Array System for Defect Imaging in Plate-like Structures

Abstract: An ultrasonic magnetostrictive transducer-based phased-array system for imaging defects in plate structures is newly proposed. In that most ultrasonic phased array systems rely on piezoelectric transducers or electromagnetic acoustic transducers, this system has its own unique feature of employing magnetostrictive transducers. Interest in using a phased array system using magnetostrictive transducers has been recently reported for pipe inspection but no such system has been developed for plate inspection. In t… Show more

“…In Fig. 19, OL-MPT imaging is shown in the formation of a phased-array system [110]. Among the transducers shown in the figure, four of them were used to form a phased-array transmitting unit and the remaining four MPTs were used as receivers; the excitation frequency was 400 kHz.…”

“…However, the shock profile set in this analysis simulates the shock generated when the pyrotechnic devices at the interface between the satellite and the launch vehicle explode during satellite separation from the launch vehicle. When conducting satellite payload-level environmental tests, the tests are performed considering the actual levels of shock loads experienced by the satellite payload (Lee et al 2000). The shock loads transmitted to the payload are attenuated as they pass through the launch vehicle interface, various interfaces, and components after being initiated by the pyrotechnic explosions.…”

“…Among the different type of transducers that generate guided elastic waves, this work focuses on transducers that generate omnidirectional waves [4][5][6][7]. A phased array system that uses omnidirectional transducers can conduct inspections along all directions around the system by adequately tuning the time-delays and amplitudes in the transducers [8][9][10][11][12]. The performance of the phased array system during an inspection is seriously affected not only by the uniformity of the waves propagating in all directions but also by the output power.…”
