Development and Application of Hot Embossing in Polymer Processing: A Review

Abstract: Hot embossing of polymer materials is a promising technology for the fabrication of high quality and precision patterns on the micro/nanoscales. There are three basic forms of hot embossing including, plate-to-plate (P2P), roll-to-plate (R2P), and roll-to-roll (R2R) hot embossing. It also can be divided into isothermal and non-isothermal hot embossing according to the different temperature control modes of polymer substrates and structured molds. This review reports recent progress made of hot embossing method… Show more

“…Because of their light weight, low water absorption, high flexibility, good chemical corrosion resistance, high specific modulus and low thermal conductivity, polymers are often used in the field of construction engineering [ 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 ]. In construction engineering, polyvinyl chloride or PP are commonly used as drainage pipes, PP or PE are used as water supply pipe, and polyolefin and polyamide are used as insulation layers in cables.…”

“…Due to the simple and low temperature processing, the final surfaces are free of toxic or chemically modified leftovers. According to the required processing throughput and final textured area, hot embossing can be implemented in plate-to-plate, roll-to-plate or roll-to-roll systems [ 13 , 14 , 15 ]. Therefore, this method can be tailored to specific application requirements with low costs and high productivity.…”

“…Polymer materials have been used widely in many fields, including energy storage and conversion, 1‐6 electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, 7 thermal management, 8,9 sensors, 10,11 cryogenic temperature, 12 carbon dioxide adsorption, 13 solar cell, 14 energy savings, 15 micro/nano‐manufacturing technology, 16 flame retardants, 17 injection molding, 18 coating, 16,19 biomedicine, 20,21 flexible electronics, 21 aerospace, 22 automotive, 22 and defense industries 22 and so forth, due to their lightweight, low cost, low density, easy processing and flexible. However, it is common fact for polymer materials that those composites are extremely easy to be damaged due to the internal or external factors of polymer materials in the process of actual working 23‐27 .…”
