Development activities of the high heat flux scraper element

Abstract: The function of the high heat flux scraper element is to reduce the heat loads on the element ends of the actively cooled divertor of Wendelstein 7-X. The scraper element is actively water cooled to remove up to 550 kW steady state power load, with localized heat fluxes as high as 20 MW/m². Its surface area, 0.17 m², is contoured to optimally intercept both upstream and downstream particle fluxes. The plasma facing surface is made of 24 individual scraper fingers based on the monoblock technology. Each scraper… Show more

“…Before the fabrication of this module prototype, an intermediate prototype will be produced to validate the presented manufacturing process of the water boxes in which the PFCs are replaced by stainless steel tubes to avoid possibly damaging of the PFCs at this stage [13]. Once possibly improved and qualified, the module prototype will be fabricated using the 4 remaining PFC prototypes and tested in the GLADIS facility.…”

“…Design activities have been carried out to prepare a possible fabrication of the water-cooled scraper for the second operation phase [6]. Full-scale prototypes have been manufactured and tested to validate the design and to develop required technologies.…”

“…A high heat-flux scraper element (HHF-SE), if placed in front of the divertor pumping gap, would intercept a portion of the convective flux and protect the divertor edges (see Fig. 1) [2]. This HHF-SE has been designed using carbon fiber reinforced carbon composite monoblocks which have been shown to withstand steady-state heat fluxes up to 20 MW/m 2 [3][4].…”
