Developing the implicit association test to uncover hidden preferences for sustainable drainage systems

Abstract: Understanding public perceptions of Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) is critical for addressing barriers to their implementation. Perceptions are typically evaluated using explicit measures (e.g. questionnaires) that are subject to biases and may not fully capture attitudes towards SuDS. A novel image-based application of the Implicit Association Test is developed to investigate unconscious perceptions of SuDS in public greenspace and combined with explicit tests to evaluate perceptions of greenspac… Show more

“…Similar findings are reported for Shenzhen (Bach 2010), Shanghai and Beijing (Zhang 2019). This effect is known for amenity green space in China (Chen & Li 2017;Zheng et al 2020) and BGI projects, as seen in Newcastle (UK) and Portland (USA), where property prices increased after BGI enhancement such that housing areas are known as 'health and wellbeing developments' (Netusil et al 2014;O'Donnell et al 2020). In Ningbo's New East Town, the eco-corridor increased prices c. 40-50% relative to similar apartments in adjacent districts.…”

“…The unclear distribution of responsibilities among stakeholders can impede the decision-making processes associated with GSI implementation. Particularly, the general public's involvement is the fundamental building block that could be influential in shaping the direction of GSI implementation [17,28,47]. Dhakal and Chevalier [83] stated in their study that, above all challenges, cognitive barriers and socio-institutional factors should be the primary issue to focus on.…”

“…It has been supported by various studies that cognitive biases are influential in decision making and planning [44]. Yet, little attention has been given to the potential influence of cognitive biases in GSI implementation, despite numerous studies on perceptions of various GSI stakeholder groups [45][46][47]. This study aims to bridge this knowledge gap.…”

“…Engaging the range of stakeholders needed to ensure that the new vision for managing water comes about is challenging, particularly where their behaviour, responsibilities or personal property or neighbourhood has to be changed [75]. There will be a need for more personal engagement by not only property dwellers, but also a broader group of stakeholders than for the traditional approach to drainage.…”
