Abstract: Engaging in research activities does not always result in the development of practice, however, there appears to be a link between practice development and critical thinking.

“…As there are many aspects of nursing practice about which little is 'known', it will always be necessary for primary research to be undertaken. 'Doing' and 'using' research should be accorded equal standing; and there are several ways that nurses can undertake research in a practice setting (Bell and Procter, 1998). Whilst nursing has arguably 'concentrated primarily on equipping nurses to become proficient users of research' rather than to become researchers (Procter, 1997, p. 321), practice development should support all nurses to both 'do' and 'use' research.…”

“…• Negative staff attitudes. [27][28][29][30][31][32] Negative attitudes may be due to lack of ownership, to seeing the CDU as the leader's 'baby' and to intolerance of excellence or difference. This also results from attempting too much too soon and then focusing on lack of progress, tardiness and failures, rather than on small successes. This latter tendency, certainly in Western Sydney, is associated with an almost endemic lack of trust among nurses and with perceptions of being undervalued by other health professionals and managers.…”

“…Practice development in health care is also often criticized for being nebulous and of having an unclear and poorly understood relationship with research (Unsworth 2000; Carradice & Round 2004). Neither does it always follow that links with research activity results in the development of practice (Bell & Procter 1998). Another difficulty is that practice development often struggles to find its place as it can be seen as an extra to normal work even though it ought to be an inherent part of practice.…”
