Developing Large-scale Electronic Patient Records Conforming to the openEHR Architecture

Abstract: This paper focuses on one of the first efforts to implement large-scale Electronic Patient Records (EPRs) in Western hospitals conforming to the international openEHR architecture. A key aim with the openEHR architecture is to offer clinical users the possibility to define structured content of the EPR themselves. This is supposed to contribute to interoperability across various health care systems. The paper contributes with empirical insight in the first two years of the process and argues that establishing … Show more

“…Especially highlighted was a concern and skepticism towards the concept of one EHR for all users, and the informants worried how it would inscribe fixed patterns of use. Akson is intended for a heterogenous user group and numerous use-cases, which requires both standardization and flexibility to be able to scale and promote growth, and ensure the capability for users to adapt the platform according to local requirements (Ellingsen et al, 2014;Ulriksen et al, 2017). For shared large-scale platforms, as the case in the present study, the platform's ability to facilitate efficient and appropriate services is arguably essential for stimulating network effects.…”

“…The openEHR approach has received many attentions from both industry and academy through many national or regional initiatives from many contries [ 7 ]. Recently, the achievements of the openEHR approach have been reported in many countries, such as Brazil [ 8 , 9 ], Australia [ 10 – 12 ], Germany [ 13 ], Russia [ 14 ], Japan [ 15 ], Norway [ 16 ], UK [ 17 , 18 ], Sweden [ 19 ], Denmark [ 20 ], Indonesia [ 21 , 22 ], China [ 23 ] and so on. Among these countries, China is still in its infancy stage of using openEHR approach.…”

“…Data security along with data reliability is a key element that hinders the tele-monitoring process and has opened up a new challenge for engineers who recommend a technologically dependable infrastructure (Stachura & Khasanshina, 2007). Most tele-monitoring devices are still not standardized and incompatible with each other's, so in most countries, systems developments are based on local requirements and strategies (Christensen, 2018), (Ellingsen et al, 2014).…”
