Developing integrated research data management support in close relation to doctoral students' research practices

Abstract: The quest for open research data is the driving force behind the development of the whole area of research data management practices. We, as a university library, offer and develop support to researchers and doctoral students. Based on the result of a web survey submitted to all researchers at Malmö University, and the knowledge that doctoral students are on their way of forming their individual research practices, we have made doctoral students our first target group for specific seminars and workshops promot… Show more

“…a dedicated section with staff responsible for research promotion and space for offering relevant services, and the provision of information technology and personnel with sound research knowledge to conduct RSS. Fransson et al (2016) used a mixed-methods approach to investigate the development of integrated RDM support at Malmö University Library, Sweden. They recommended that university libraries should conduct workshops for PhD students regarding findings, re-using and citing open research data, active data management plan, structured practice for organizing data management and depositing research data to local archives and publishing data sets for dissemination.…”

“…However, as the decade unfolded, it became apparent that because of its evolving nature, research was now characterized by a complex data-intensive world in which many researchers were operating (Tenopir et al , 2014; Fransson et al , 2016; Si et al , 2019; Wolski et al , 2020). Consequently, LIS researchers began to report on studies as to how academic libraries could either initiate or improve their existing research data services (RDS).…”

“…OS and RDM skills training is arguably crucial for a variety of audiences at academic and industrial organisations [17]. In academia, they will include researchers at all career phases (from doctoral researchers to senior professors and students at the bachelor and masters' levels [18], while in industry they will be instructors, research management staff, data scientists, data stewards, copyright officers, librarians and citizen scientists. They will all benefit from OS and RDM training, which needs to be tailored to the needs of specific subgroups.…”

“…By developing specific approaches to creating data management education, libraries have found successful avenues in implementing stand-alone courses and one-shot workshops [7], integrating research data management into an existing curriculum [8], and offering domain-specific training [9]. Libraries have offered these training programs by providing general data management training to undergraduate and graduate students [1012], doctoral scholars [13], and the general research community [1420], whereas domain-specific data management can be seen most prominently in the life sciences [21], earth and environmental sciences [22, 23], social sciences [24], and the digital humanities [25].…”
