Developing high-growth businesses in rural areas: A study of four U.S. States

Abstract: Those who would establish high-growth businesses (HGBs) in rural settings face significant challenges. We report findings from more than 80 in-depth interviews regarding the obstacles that rural HGBs face and identify approaches for overcoming these obstacles. First, interviews confirm the need for improved access to a full range of financing options to support HGBs across different development stages. Second, HGBs need in-depth, sophisticated technical assistance, which is generally unavailable in rural areas… Show more

“…The quality and level of development of business ventures in rural areas is lower than in urban areas, characterized by higher population densities, among other factors (McDaniel, 2002). Rural entrepreneurs place less importance on developing business ventures on an ever-increasing scale, while their activities focus more on relating and adapting to the prevailing rural culture and lifestyle (Lamb & Sherman, 2010).…”

“…In order to develop economic ventures, business ventures, access to diverse forms of financing is needed. It's not only about the start-up and early growth phases, but also the subsequent phases of business development Among the greatest difficulties identified, barriers to business development in rural areas, the encouragement of venture capital funds to invest funds in early-stage businesses is mentioned first (Lamb & Sherman, 2010).Among small businesses, a greater number of jobs are created by start-ups (Kirchoff, 1994) against those characterized by longer periods of operation. A similar regularity, especially with regard to rural areas, may indicate the high importance of the business form of activity.…”

“…Traditional strategies of business attraction whereby large corporations are incentivized to relocate to a local community leads to these corporations exploiting the resources contained in that community without regard for the sustainability of such exploitation (Lamb & Sherman, 2010;Wang, 2018). This is because these corporations are not headquartered in these communities, and are only there for what they can get (Conroy et al, 2016;Peter, 2017).…”

“…Location, natural resources, social capital, business networks and technology exert complex, dynamic influences on entrepreneurial activity (Hauser, 2000). However, the current literature is mainly based on developed countries, such as the USA (Hunt et al , 2021; Lamb and Sherman, 2010; McGranahan et al , 2011) or European countries (Bosma and Sternberg, 2014; Bosworth, 2012; Pato and Teixeira, 2016), while developing regions, such as Latin America, have received little attention. In South America, rurality has unique conditions that make this region an ideal candidate for a comparison study (Aguinis et al , 2020): not only may this region feature contrasts between urban and rural settings that are starker than those observed in previous studies, but it is also characterised by a plethora of indigenous communities, a lack of facilities and urbanisation, high levels of poverty and one of the most complex and diverse biospheres on the planet (Macpherson et al , 2021).…”
