Developing gene-tagged molecular markers for evaluation of genetic association of apple SWEET genes with fruit sugar accumulation

Abstract: Sugar content is an important component of fruit quality. Although sugar transporters are known to be crucial for sugar accumulation, the role of genes encoding SWEET sugar transporters in fruit sugar accumulation remains elusive. Here we report the effect of the SWEET genes on fruit sugar accumulation in apple. A total of 25 MdSWEET genes were identified in the apple genome, and 9 were highly expressed throughout fruit development. Molecular markers of these 9 MdSWEET genes were developed and used for genotyp… Show more

“…To breed apples with improved flavor, Brown et al and Visser et al studied the classification standard of apple sugar and acid content, and the relationship between sugar and acid content and fruit flavor 86 , 87 . A recent study on the effect of SWEET genes on sugar accumulation in apple fruit provided the basis for the genetic improvement of flavor quality 88 . For texture quality breeding, researchers have targeted alleles related to ethylene, which plays an important role in climacteric fruits, such as tomato, apple, peach, and banana 89 .…”

“…Vegetative growth and reproductive growth constitute the two stages of plant growth (Wardlaw, 1990). In terms of fruit-producing species, fruit is the major 'sink' in the reproductive growth stage, during which large amounts of photosynthates are stored in the vacuole as sucrosesuch as that which occurs in tomato (Shammai et al, 2018) and apple (Zhen et al, 2018) fruit-or as hexoses (fructose and glucose), such as that which occurs in grape (Zhang et al, 2006) berries, affecting fruit quality (Kalt-Torres and Huber, 1987). Due to competition for sugar availability, sugar partitioning between vegetative growth and reproductive growth is vital with respect to increasing fruit yields and quality (Gifford et al, 1984).…”

“…Consequently, sugar transportation is important to maintain the balance Plants 2020, 9,342 2 of 20 between source and sink [3]. Sucrose is the main transport sugar in the phloem in many plants [4,5]. However, polyols can also be transported sugar in some species [6].…”
