Developing data capability with non-profit organisations using participatory methods

Abstract: In this paper, we explore the methodologies underpinning two participatory research collaborations with Australian non-profit organisations that aimed to build data capability and social benefit in data use. We suggest that studying and intervening in data practices in situ, that is, in organisational data settings expands opportunities for improving the social value of data. These situated and collaborative approaches not only address the ‘expertise lag’ for non-profits but also help to realign the potential … Show more

“…For example, in one case study designers successfully created explanations for an ADS being used for communal energy accounting by having conversations directly with the tool’s users (Cech, 2021). In another example, participatory design was used to successfully embed positive data-related values in nonprofit organizations in Australia (McCosker et al, 2022).…”

“…Future research on AI and skills should seek to integratively analyse the perspectives of different stakeholders through participatory co-design approaches. Publications in this journal have pointed out the importance of multistakeholder, participatory research to better understand the implications of AI diffusion in the workplace (Jarrahi et al, 2021; McCosker et al, 2022). Participatory co-design helps bring together researchers from various disciplines, technology developers, users and policymakers to address research questions by combining and further developing the various stakeholders’ understandings of the problem space (Sanders and Stappers, 2008).…”

“…Nonprofit organizations are increasingly interested in data-driven approaches to better manage their operations and develop their predictive capabilities (McCosker et al , 2022). The quality of decision-making is primarily influenced by data-related decision-making capabilities (Shamim et al , 2019).…”
