Developing and managing transdisciplinary and transformative research on the coastal dynamics of sea level rise: Experiences and lessons learned

Abstract: There is increasing emphasis from funding agencies on transdisciplinary approaches to integrate science and end-users. However, transdisciplinary research can be laborious and costly and knowledge of effective collaborative processes in these endeavors is incomplete. More guidance grounded in actual project experiences is needed. Thus, this article describes and examines the collaborative process of the Ecological Effects of Sea Level Rise in the Northern Gulf of Mexico transdisciplinary research project, incl… Show more

“…While the multimodel framework highlighted in this special issue represents significant advancement in how predictions of SLR impacts are modeled, the ultimate intent of EESLR‐NGOM is to address explicit needs of coastal managers. To ensure that products and tools developed through this project are relevant and usable by stakeholders, DeLorme et al [] describes a transdisciplinary approach to facilitate collaboration between project scientists and a stakeholder advisory committee. Pre‐project engagement, annual workshops, and periodic webinars are key tools that were used to facilitate objective feedback and analysis of EESLR‐NGOM science activities.…”

“…Hydrological modeling is inherently an iterative process involving building, testing and revising specific implementations. Hence, another key issue is that collaborative flood modeling can achieve what is critical for making any type of science useful: iterative interaction between researchers (modelers) and end‐users (DeLorme et al, ; Dilling & Lemos, ). Finally, we note that fine‐resolution urban flood modeling is rapidly advancing and now supports realistic, street‐level flood visualizations (Bhola et al, ; Fewtrell et al, ; Kobayashi et al, ; Sanders, ; Sanders & Schubert, ; Xia et al, ).…”

“…Cash et al, 2003;Welp et al, 2006;Allen et al, 2013;von Storch et al, 2015). Knowledge on transdisciplinary approaches is considered to benefit from project experiences (Jahn et al, 2012;Bergmann et al, 2016) and "more guidance grounded in actual project experiences is needed" (DeLorme et al, 2016). Thus, the purpose of this study is to convey first-hand experiences on stakeholder interaction and transdisciplinary orientations from the Coastal Observing System for Northern and Arctic Seas (COSYNA).…”

“…There are numerous definitions for transdisciplinarity in literature, but a generally accepted definition is still not available. Generally agreed upon main features are addressing a real-world problem, integrating different disciplines, and involvement of non-academic stakeholders (Bergmann et al, 2016;DeLorme et al, 2016;Jahn et al, 2012;. Transdisciplinarity combines interdisciplinarity (collaboration between researchers from different disciplines aimed at a synthesis and integration of knowledge; Bernstein, 2015) and interactions with extra-academic interest groups, for example from industry, governments, and non-governmental organizations.…”
