The sustainable development of mining processes requires a deep knowledge of the effectiveness of mining equipment and is quite complex to analyze due to the intrinsic characteristics of the mining industry. In this regard, its measurement and control can lead to appropriate management, improving the mining processes’ efficiency, increasing safety levels, and reducing environmental impacts. This paper developed a new methodology to study the effectiveness of equipment in mining processes, researching the impacts of process management, process control, operating conditions, operational mining schedule, and maintenance programs on the effectiveness of drilling rig fleets using two actual coal mines located in the northwest of Spain and data collected over 10 years. Thus, a new method, called Overall Mining Equipment Effectiveness (OMEE), was developed, verifying its appropriateness and flexibility to analyze the effectiveness of mining equipment by examining the availability rate, utilization rate, and productivity index.

OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) is a key performance indicator (KPI) widely used in performance analysis in the mining industry. The present study develops the ODE indicator (Overall Drilling Effectiveness) adapting OEE concept for the reality of diamond drilling. The product of availability, utilization and quality rates in the drilling process calculates ODE. Quality is defined by the quotient between recovered drill core metreage and total drilling advance metreage. ODE consists of a management numeric tool when confronted with productivity results and drilling equipment cost. In this case study of Pilar Mine, property of Jaguar Mining Inc., the 21% rate portrays the minimum acceptable ODE value considering the enterprise operational reality according to its geological, logistical and financial particularities. When the ODE rate approaches or exceeds this value, productivity increase and cost reduction per drilled metreage are noted. The adaptation of OEE concept and elaboration of ODE as a new performance indicator, intended directly for diamond drilling process, displays as a useful performance control tool. The utilization of ODE as a KPI provides the opportunity to manage operational productivity and financial performance simultaneously.

Before deployment of lean initiative, it is of great significance to examine the readiness of manufacturing SMEs to ensure they have the prerequisite for successful implementation. Consequently, in order to determine how prepared Nigerian manufacturing SMEs are to successfully adopt lean initiatives, the study measures the indirect effects of customer relations on leadership/top management, employee relations, and process management. Data for the study was collected from manufacturing SMEs and analyzed using Smart PLS-SEM 4.1. The study's conclusions demonstrate the substantial indirect effects that customer relationships have on employee relations, leadership/top management, and process management. Additionally, a positive correlation between employee relations and leadership/top management and process management is indicated by the direct effect findings. The study reiterates the imperatives of customers at the center of lean philosophy and emphasizes the need for synergy between leadership and employees in effective process management. The study also provides a new insight into the indirect effect of customer relations and the need for top management and employee relations in assessing the manufacturing SMEs' preparedness to implement lean initiatives for the actualization of quality and continuous improvement.
