Developing and Evaluating a Graduate Student Teaching Assistant Training Course in the Chemistry Department of a Large American University

Abstract: Graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) play an essential role in the teaching of introductory chemistry courses at many higher education institutions. On the basis of best practices suggested by the literature, we developed our GTA training course to focus on modeling best practices in the classroom, providing opportunities for incoming GTAs to try new teaching methodologies and reflect on their teaching, and observing and giving feedback on their teaching throughout the course. Here we describe the structure of … Show more

“…Taking the innovation programs of college students as an example, according to the e-learning training content, the innovation and entrepreneurship education of college students can be divided into four modules: awareness education, knowledge ability education, environment cognition education, and practice education [17,18]. The programs aim to cultivate students' knowledge learning ability and good psychological quality [19], and the use of e-learning is to enable students to better adapt to the reform and social development trend.…”

“…(3) Determine the weight W of each evaluation index. When evaluating teachers' network multimedia teaching quality of English, we should not only pay attention to the importance of the evaluation index itself, but also pay attention to whether the evaluation index can effectively reflect the differences between different teachers [19]. For an evaluation index, the greater the difference of evaluation index values among participating teachers is, the greater its role in comprehensive evaluation is; If the evaluation index values are all equal, the evaluation index does not work in the comprehensive evaluation and does not provide any useful information.…”

“…13,14,16,22,30 The effect of demonstrator training programs on the interaction between PG demonstrators/TAs and undergraduates in laboratories, 16,22,30 including consideration from a linguistic perspective, has also been explored. 5 Although the training of PG demonstrators/TAs may require extra work, when advanced course instructions are taken into consideration, optimizing the system can provide long-range benefits to both undergraduate students and traditional PG demonstrators/TAs in chemistry laboratory education 17,20 as well as other fields. 6,11,32 In general, given the extensive provision and discussion of formalized TA teaching models in chemistry education within North America, drawing on these experiences could avoid various potential obstacles to the development of new teaching assistant programs.…”
