Developing a Very Low Vision Orientation and Mobility Test Battery (O&M-VLV)

Abstract: The O&M-VLV was designed to capture key elements of O&M performance in persons with severe vision loss, which is a population not often studied previously. Performance on these tasks was associated with both binocular visual acuity and visual field. This new protocol includes assessments of orientation, which may be of benefit in vision restoration clinical trials.

“…Data collection to address objectives 6 and 7 (establishing concurrent and predictive validity) will take longer and the following considerations will affect progress: There are no gold standard measures of functional vision for mobility or O&M to establish criterion validity, but depending on the interests of agencies and clients, comparable data might be generated from the Stuart Tactile Maps test 18 45 (spatial cognition), the Client Evaluation Tool 22 (travel skills and confidence) or personal activity monitors (distance, roaming range, activity type and travel-related stress). Adding assessment tools to VROOM and OMO will extend assessment times; O&M specialists will only fit this in as their workloads allow.…”

“…Excluding preferred mobility aids may be appropriate for some clinical or laboratory studies, but it should be acknowledged that this is not an assessment of functional mobility. 109 To assess functional mobility, individuals should be free to use their primary mobility aid.…”

“…Patients with RP often have difficulties with activities of daily living [14,15]. Most patients are impaired in mobility due to difficulties with navigation, orientation [16][17][18], and obstacle detection [19][20][21].…”
