v Spiritual issues surface as people face death.Spiritual care is the core of care for the dying. Nurses are mandated to provide spiritual care, yet little is known about the impact of spirituality on the ability to cope at the end of life. The purpose of this correlational study was to examine relationships between spirituality and coping at end of life. Adults (n = 60) enrolled in hospice between ages 30 and 90 completed the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy Spiritual Well-being Scale, the Serenity Scale, and the Cognitive Coping Scale as measures of coping. Overall physical health, the importance of religion or God, level of comfort, and level of peacefulness were measured on analogue scales of 1 to 10. Significant correlations (P G .01) were found between spirituality and importance of religion (r = .573), serenity (r = .556), peacefulness (r = .540), comfort (r = .399), and cognitive coping (r = .333). Significant correlations with the meaning/ peace subscale were peacefulness (r = .534), serenity (r = .462), and comfort (r = .359). The faith/religion subscale correlations were importance of religion (r = .682), peacefulness (r = .423), cognitive coping (r = .410), serenity (r = .408), and comfort (r = .353). Linear regression indicated that spirituality is a predictor of peacefulness (r 2 = .279) at end of life. Seventy-three percent of patients reported that illness had strengthened their spiritual lives and increased religious practices, yet most reported low levels of comfort and peace. The purposes of this study were to examine (a) differences in spiritual perspectives and practices of Latino and non-Latino young adults and (b) the cultural relevance of the Latino Spiritual Perspective Scale (LSPS). Studies indicate that spiritual perspectives are embedded within cultural group norms and vary significantly across ethnic groups. A cross-sectional survey design was used with a convenience sample of 223 Latino and non-Latino university students in the Southwestern United States. The Spiritual Perspective Scale (SPS), the LSPS, the Orthogonal Cultural Identification Scale, and a demographic questionnaire were used. Latinos scored significantly higher than non-Latinos in both measures of spiritual perspectives. Self-reported behavioral measures, such as frequency of personal prayer, were also higher among the Latino group. Latino cultural identification was the only significant predictor of LSPS scores. Findings from this study indicate that spirituality among Latinos has meanings specific to the cultural group context. These findings have implications for nursing research involving the conceptualization and measurement of spirituality among multiethnic groups. Los propósitos de este estudio eran examinar: (a) diferencias en perspectivas espirituales y prácticas de jóvenes Latinos y no Latinos; y (b) la relevancia cultural de la Escala de la Perspectiva Espiritual Latina. Estudios indican que perspectivas espirituales están incrustadas entre normas culturales del grupo y varían considerablemente entre grupos étnicos. Un diseño transversal y de encuesta fue utilizado con una muestra de conveniencia de 233 estudiantes universitarios Latinos y no Latinos en el Suroeste de los Estados Unidos. La Escala de la Perspectiva Espiritual (EPE), la Escala de la Perspectiva Espiritual Latina (EPEL), la Escala Ortogonal de Identificación Cultural, y un cuestionario demográfico fueron utilizados. Los Latinos calificaron considerablemente más alto que los no Latinos en ambas medidas de perspectivas espirituales. Medidas de comportamiento auto-reportadas, como la frecuencia de oración, también estuvieron más altas en el grupo Latino. La identificación con la cultura Latina fue el único vaticinador de las calificaciones de la EPEL. Los resultados de este estudio indican que la espiritualidad entre Latinos tiene significados específicos al contexto del grupo cultural. Estas conclusiones tienen implicaciones para las investigaciones de enfermería que involucran la conceptualización y medida de la espiritualidad entre grupos multiétnicos.

Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the relationship of spirituality and stress response including anger, depression, somatization, and job stress among Korean employees in small industries. Methods: The participants were 199 employees, aged 20 to 59, working in sixteen enterprises in C province. Workers responded to a questionnaire that included items on spirituality, a modified form of the stress response inventory (SRI-MF), and items on general characteristics. The data were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 15.0 program. Results: The level for spirituality was moderate and for SRI low. The score for anger was found to be the highest stress response. There was significant negative relationships between spirituality and stress response, depression, and job stress. Spirituality differed by age, religion and stress response differed by age, education level, marital status, and religion. Simple regression analysis showed that spirituality accounted for 37% of the SRI, a significant level. Conclusion:As the finding show that spirituality influenced the stress response of employees in small enterprises employee assistant programs (EAP) for stress management, which focus on the spirituality, age, marital status, religion, and education level, should be developed and provided for these employees.
