PurposeThis study aims to examine the state of embedded librarianship in African academic libraries by exploring the extent of librarian embedment in research processes in selected academic libraries in Africa.Design/methodology/approachA survey was conducted to collect data using an online questionnaire. The study population was comprised of librarians who directly support researchers throughout the research process in the scholarly communication and information services sections. Purposive sampling was used to select librarians, and 63 responses were received from the target of 100. The collected data were analysed using the statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS) software, and content analysis was used to analyse open-ended questions.FindingsThe study results showed that the extent and nature of librarians' embeddedness in the research process vary across different university contexts in Africa. Challenges and areas of research skill gaps among librarians were identified, and propositions to address the research skill gaps were provided.Practical implicationsThe study findings can be used as a framework for libraries to embed librarians in the research process. The study made recommendations with practical implications for library practitioners in academia, and institutions offering library and information science education, and the library management responsible for the research process.Originality/valueA study brings a novel perspective by examining the state of embedded librarianship in the African context. Its contribution generates knowledge and insights that inform the development of effective embedded librarianship practices in African academic libraries to enhance research support services and advancement of scholarly research in the region.

Introduction.In a research library, researchers are the main players, while . librarians should be the partners in conducting research even though this combination rarely happens. In general, librarians are only involved in a part of research activities as their research assistants to carry out some administrative stuffs, such as distributing questionnaires and sending invitation letters, instead of designing a research plan and/or somequestionnaires or doing data analyses.Data Collection Method. We interviewed librarians in the Center for Political Studies, Research Center for Economic, Center for Science and Technology Development, and Center for Scientific Documentation and Information of Indonesian Institute of Sciences, Jakarta.Data Analyses. Data were analyzed using qualitative analysis methods, through the direct interview, where data categorized by using open coding.Results and Discussions.The results stated that 86.7% of respondents had ever been involved in research activities carried out by the research center in the same or different units. From that result, 53.3% respondents ever engaged research activities up to 5 times in a year. In the other hands, librarians who answer conduct independent research and are often involved in the research are 13% respondents. Some recommendations figured out from this research are (1) a librarian could be a plagiarism examiner for a research proposal, (2) a librarian must be literated in information technologies, (3) a librarian should be involved in examining a literature review of the proposal and writing the manuscripts.Conclusions.The role of a librarian is not just as a research assistant or a data collector but as a research buddy who could help addressing some documentative problems.

In this article, the authors take a critical look at the challenges faced by librarians new to the profession. Using Michel de Certeau’s The Practice of Everyday Life, they examine how the coping tactics for new librarians described in the literature mirror the “tactics” de Certeau describes individuals using to “make do” within systems of power. This includes how individuals make do in their personal lives by coping with stress and how they succeed at work by developing networks and manoeuvering politically. This article will also discuss what de Certeau refers to as “strategies,” or moves undertaken by the system of power itself, within the context of onboarding and mentorship. Examining the literature on new librarians through the lens of de Certeau allows the authors to consider the ways in which the individual may choose to act tactically and integrate into a system of power, or may use the limited means available to them to quietly rebel. It also allows the critique of the use of tactics, which require individuals to take on additional work in order to adapt to the needs of the institution. Requiring new librarians to adapt to their institution is problematic, specifically in relation to precarious labour and to barriers to entry. These systematic issues require a collective response beyond what individuals can address. Using de Certeau’s work, the authors critically examine the literature that exists on new librarians and how individuals adapt and change to the needs of the academic library as a system of power.
