Developing a Maritime Safety Index using Fuzzy Logics

Abstract: Safe shipping is essential for society and different measures are taken to improve maritime safety, for example through implementation of traffic separation schemes, radar surveillance and traffic management concepts. But how can maritime safety be measured to determine the effects of those implementations? In this study, a real-time maritime safety index for a ship is developed, taking into account both the probability of grounding and the probability of collision. The index is developed using fuzzy integrate… Show more

“…Therefore, the use of fuzzy logic to assemble spoken language with mathematical rules is an attractive idea. Previous works have already focused on these subjects (Gentile et al, 2003;Howard & Seraji, 2002;Olindersson et al, 2017), proving that with the use of colloquial language we can establish the inherent safety of a piece of equipment.…”

“…Indices based on fuzzy logic, such as the work from Gentile et al (2003), included the possibility of converting linguistic variables into fuzzy rankings. A safety index based on fuzzy logic was developed by Olindersson et al (2017) to enhance the safety of ship traffic. Other index based on fuzzy logic was used to assess the safety of the landing site risk (Howard & Seraji, 2002).…”

“…This is very close to human reasoning, so fuzzy theory and fuzzy logic are valuable tools for modeling variables humans use to describe surroundings. Fuzzy logic is a widely used method by authors researching maritime collision risk and avoidance [28][29][30][31][32][33][34][35][36], maritime fuzzy controllers [37], Fuzzy Fault Tree Analysis [38], and others. The essential part of classical fuzzy systems and the Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (Fuzzy AHP) is the membership function, but there are difficulties related to defining parameters that define the shape of these functions [39].…”

“…3 а таке перерегулювання може продовжуватися вздовж всієї траєкторії, тому результуючий рух судна далекий від ідеального. Очевидно, що потрібно передбачити найкращий спосіб керування[16,17].Щоб зрозуміти, яким має бути найкращий контролер, опишемо формально той тип контролера, який допускає перерегулювання. Контролери, що прикладають зусилля, яке…”
