This empirical study was conducted to measure visitors' experiences with a mobile guide application at Kuching Orchid Garden (KOG). A between-group experimental design with 114 participants was conducted to test three groups; (1) a group using the mobile guide application as an information aid, (2) a control group (with no information aid), and (3) a group using pamphlets to explore the KOG. The Museum Experience Scale (MES) was used to evaluate visitors' experience for all participants, whilst the Multimedia Guide Scale (MMGS) was used to evaluate the visitors' experience with the mobile guide group. The most notable result from the Museum Experience Scale (MES) showed an impact on the visitors in terms of knowledge and learning when using the mobile guide application. However, the study found that enhancing visitors experience goes beyond simply providing interactive technologies in public settings to aid with information delivery. A limitation was providing relevant information in a timely and seamless manner due to inaccuracies of mapping between physical and digital environments. Future works should consider beacons and other Bluetooth low energy (BLE) technology to address the issues with location based devices. It is also important to highlight that the use of one's own device had a significant impact on learnability and control of the device, thus suggesting that the BYOD concept should be widely used in informal educational settings implementing mobile guide applications. The use of MES and MMGS informs future researches with an understanding of the different dimensions of visitors' experiences with mobile guide technology in public spaces to inform mobile application development that may further boost visitors' engagement, emotional connection, and meaningful experience.

Situating students to learn from the real world has been recognized as an important and challenging issue. However, in a real-world learning environment, there are usually many physical constraints that affect the learning performance of students, such as the total learning time, the limitation of the number of students who can visit a learning target, and the time needed for moving from one learning location to another. It is essential to guide the students along an efficient learning path to maximize their learning performance according to the current situation. In this paper, an Active LEarning Support System (ALESS) for context-aware ubiquitous learning environments is designed and developed. ALESS can provide learning guidance when conducting ubiquitous learning activities. A great deal of context information is used in ALESS, including the location, the current capacity of the learning object, the time available etc. ALESS is able to actively provide the required learning support to individual students when they approach the corresponding real-world learning targets. To evaluate the performance of ALESS, an experiment was conducted in the National Science Museum of Taiwan. The experimental results showed that, with the help of ALESS, the students learned more efficiently, and achieved better learning performance.

Καλωσορίζοντας τη νέα ψηφιακή εποχή ο Πολιτισμός και η κληρονομιά του ενσωματώνει καθημερινά όλο και περισσότερο την τεχνολογία και τις εφαρμογές της Πληροφορικής στην έρευνα και την καθημερινή του πρακτική. Η παρούσα διατριβή φιλοξενεί μια, ιδιαίτερα, εκτεταμένη έρευνα της διεθνούς βιβλιογραφίας αποδελτιώνοντας μια πληθώρα ψηφιακών συστημάτων που υποστηρίζουν με τις υπηρεσίες τους ποικίλα επιστημονικά πεδία του Πολιτισμού. Μέσα από την παραπάνω έρευνα καθίσταται σαφές ότι οι ψηφιακές υπηρεσίες που έχουν προταθεί έως σήμερα, στη μεγάλη πλειοψηφία τους, αφορούν την υποστήριξη των διαδικασιών της ψηφιοποίησης, της ψηφιακής διατήρησης και διάσωσης, αλλά και της οργάνωσης και γνωστοποίησης της πολιτισμικής πληροφορίας. Στη διατριβή αυτή προσπαθούμε να αποτυπώσουμε το επόμενο βήμα στη σχέση Πληροφορικής και Πολιτισμού, παίρνοντας σαν δεδομένο ότι η τεχνολογία δεν μένει σταθερή και καθημερινά τροφοδοτεί την ανθρωπότητα με νέα επιτεύγματα (Διαδίκτυο των Πραγμάτων, Επαυξημένη και Εικονική Πραγματικότητα, Σημασιολογικός Ιστός, Μη Επανδρωμένα Ιπτάμενα Οχήματα). Η απάντηση που προτείνει αυτή η διατριβή είναι ο εκσυγχρονισμός των ψηφιακών υπηρεσιών που υποστηρίζουν τις διαδικασίες διαχείρισης (καταγραφή, ψηφιοποίηση, οργάνωση, διάχυση, αξιοποίηση) της πολιτισμικής πληροφορίας ούτως ώστε να γίνουν περισσότερο επίκαιρες, προσαρμοστικές, επεκτάσιμες, εξατομικεύσιμες και αποτελεσματικές ή αλλιώς πιο «έξυπνες». Προτείνουμε τη δημιουργία έξυπνων ψηφιακών περιβαλλόντων που να σχεδιάζονται με τέτοιο τρόπο ώστε να προσφέρουν έξυπνες υπηρεσίες για τον Πολιτισμό και την κληρονομιά του, με σύγχρονο τρόπο, αλλά και να υποστηρίζουν την βιωσιμότητα του φορέα που τα λειτουργεί. Σύμφωνα με τη διεθνή βιβλιογραφία, ένα ψηφιακό περιβάλλον χαρακτηρίζεται «έξυπνο» όταν προσπαθεί να αντιγράψει τις θεμελιώδεις ικανότητες του ανθρώπου και της φύσης προκειμένου να επιτύχει επαρκή πρόοδο στην επίλυση σύνθετων προβλημάτων. Για τη διατριβή αυτή, ένα έξυπνο ψηφιακό περιβάλλον (πλατφόρμα υπηρεσιών, σύστημα) για τον Πολιτισμό και την κληρονομιά του οφείλει να σχεδιάζεται με τέτοιο τρόπο που να προσφέρει έξυπνες ψηφιακές υπηρεσίες τόσο σε ειδικούς και επαγγελματίες όσο και σε θιασώτες του Πολιτισμού, να καλλιεργεί ένα αίσθημα εμπιστοσύνης στους χρήστες του όσον αφορά τη διαχείριση της πολιτισμικής πληροφορίας, να προσφέρει υπηρεσίες ανεξάρτητα από το χώρο και το χρόνο που βρίσκεται ο χρήστης, να οπτικοποιεί την πολιτισμική πληροφορία με τρόπο που να απαντά στις ανάγκες του εκάστοτε χρήστη, να διαχέει την πολιτισμική πληροφορία σε όσο το δυνατόν μεγαλύτερα κοινά και να ευαισθητοποιεί τους χρήστες πάνω σε ζητήματα διάσωσης της κληρονομιάς του Πολιτισμού. Μια σειρά από ερευνητικά ερωτήματα αναδύονται άμεσα: Πώς θα σχεδιάσουμε ένα σύγχρονο έξυπνο ψηφιακό περιβάλλον για τον Πολιτισμό και την κληρονομιά του; Πώς θα αξιολογήσουμε την προσφορά ενός τέτοιου περιβάλλοντος στην ικανοποίηση των χρηστών που το χρησιμοποιούν και των φορέων που το λειτουργούν;
