Developing a family resilience assessment tool for health visiting/public health nursing practice using virtual commissioning, high-fidelity simulation and focus groups

Abstract: UK public health nurse assessment of family resilience is a necessary component of monitoring family health and children’s development and identifying areas for change. This research was part of an exploration of Welsh public health nurses’ understanding of ‘family resilience’ as a concept underpinning their practice. From it, the Family Resilience Assessment Instrument Tool (FRAITTM www.frait.wales/) was developed for public health nurses use. “…Having said that, this emerging strategy using a primary care simulation‐based poisoning case can provide a realistic public health clinical experience in a local setting while also preparing the context for the development of global citizenship values (Pontin et al, 2020; Sanchez‐Cristal et al, 2019). In terms of increasing conceptual, practical and methodological knowledge of the rural working environment, rural workers and pesticide use, the use of a socio‐environmental care approach provides a major contribution to and impact the field of nursing in public health, particularly for the care of rural populations (Conti et al, 2018; Silvério et al, 2020).…”

“…FRAIT was grounded in the academic literature during its development phase and a rigorous narrative review was undertaken (Pontin et al., 2019). Following the evaluation of its use in practice, it was considered appropriate to carry out a systematic review of the literature around public health nurses/HVs using family resilience as a concept when working with families with children under 5 years.…”

“…An All‐Wales consultation process with senior HVs and frontline HVs identified levels of family resilience as central to HV assessments. A group concept mapping exercise (GCM) was undertaken with HVs in 2014 (Wallace et al., 2019). GCM is a structured methodology that rapidly organizes a group's ideas about a given phenomenon to form a commonly agreed framework.…”
