Abstract:This article deals with a historical textbook on orthography published in 1850 by Jan Slavomír Tomíček. It is shown that this book is in many ways a 'hidden' contrastive grammar, because it contrasts a variety of Czech phenomena with German equivalents. The article attempts to explain this striking feature of Tomíček's book.
