DetServ: Network Models for Real-Time QoS Provisioning in SDN-Based Industrial Environments

Abstract: Industrial networks require real-time guarantees for the flows they carry. That is, flows have hard end-to-end delay requirements that have to be deterministically guaranteed. While proprietary extensions of Ethernet have provided solutions, these often require expensive forwarding devices. The rise of Software-Defined Networking (SDN) opens the door to the design of centralized traffic engineering frameworks for providing such real-time guarantees. As part of such a framework, a network model is needed for th… Show more

“…Though there are some interesting primilinary restuls on the integration of EI and SDN [190], [215], [216] but still there is lot of efforts required for the reliable and efficient working of SDN-based EI. Additionally, integrating real-time QoS capability to end-to-end traffic flows in EI and SDN-based SGC is also an interesting area to explore [217].…”

“…Petra Vizarreta, Amaury Van Bemten, Ermin Sakic, Khawar Abbasi, Nikolaos E. Petroulakis, Wolfgang Kellerer and Carmen Mas Machuca W First studies on software-defined industrial networks have shown that it is possible to achieve deterministic delay [4], high availability and low recovery times [5,6], and guarantee high security standards [7] with commodity SDN switches and general purpose hardware. The feasibility of achieving industrial grade quality of service with open and extensible protocol suite provided by state-of-the-art SDN and NFV solutions, has been already demonstrated in an operational wind park environment as a part of the VirtuWind project [2].…”
