• High concentrations of PCDD/Fs and PBDEs were found at wastewater discharge points.• PCDD/F and PBDE concentrations were low to moderate compared to data in literature.• The concentration difference between fish species was attributed to feeding habits.• The fish were fit for human consumption with regard to PCDD/Fs and PBDEs. a b s t r a c t a r t i c l e i n f o Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PCDD/Fs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were analyzed in sediments and fish from the Murchison Bay of Lake Victoria by high resolution gas chromatography/ high resolution mass spectrometry (HRGC/HRMS). Average concentrations of total (Σ) PCDD/Fs and ΣPBDEs in sediments ranged from 68.8 to 479 pg g −1 dry weight (dw) and 60.8 to 179 pg g −1 dw, respectively. Contamination levels of sedimentary PCDD/Fs and PBDEs were low to moderate compared to other urbanized regions worldwide. The concentrations in different fish species (Nile perch; Lates niloticus and Nile tilapia; Oreochromis niloticus) were 5.32 to 49.0 pg g −1 wet weight (ww) for PCDD/Fs and 59.3 to 495 pg g −1 ww for PBDEs. Higher concentrations of the pollutants were found in L. niloticus than O. niloticus, which could be attributed to species differences in feeding habits and lifestyles. World Health Organization-toxic equivalents (WHO 2005 -TEQs) for PCDD/Fs ranged from 0.08 to 0.33 pg TEQ g −1 dw and 0.001-0.14 pg TEQ g −1 ww in sediments and fish, respectively. The TEQ values were low compared to the data for fresh water fish reported in literature and within a permissible level of 3.5 pg g −1 ww recommended by the European Commission. Based on the Commission set value and minimum risk level criteria formulated by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, the fish from the Murchison Bay was fit for human consumption.

The aim of this work was to assess the levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the environment and their sources found in protected regions of southeastern Brazil. Samples of sediments were collected at four National Parks: Itatiaia National Park (PNIT), Serra da Bocaina National Park (PNSB), Serra dos Orgãos National Park (PNSO) and Jurubatiba National Park (PNJUB). The National Parks studied comprise rainforests, altitudinal fields and 'restinga' environments located in the Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo states. The sampling was conducted between 2002 and 2004 from June to September. In general, the environmental levels of PAHs found were similar to those in other remote areas around the globe. PNIT exhibited the highest median values of total PAHs in sediment (97 ng·g −1 ), followed by PNJUB (89 ng·g −1 ), PNSO (57 ng·g −1 ) and PNSB (27 ng·g −1 ). The highest levels of total PAHs (576 and 24430 ng·g −1 ) could be associated to a point source contamination where are characterizated for human activities. At PNSB and PNIT the PAH profiles were richer in 2 and 3 ring compounds, whereas at PNSO and PNJUB, the profiles exhibited 3 and 4 ring compounds. The phenanthrene predominance in most samples could indicate the influence of biogenic synthesis. The samples with a petrogenic pattern found in this study might be associated with the vicinity of major urban areas, highway traffic and/or industrial activities close to PNSO and PNIT. At PNIT and PNJUB, forest fires and slash and burn agricultural practices may drive the results towards a pyrolytic pattern.

Avaliação do residual de bifenilos policlorados em músculo congelado e lombo cozido congelado de atum (Katsuwonus pelamis)Occurrence of polychlorinated biphenyl residues in frozen muscle and frozen cooked loin of tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) RESUMO A fim de identificar uma possível contaminação por bifenilos policlorados (PCBs) e avaliar a influência do processamento do pescado nos níveis residuais desses compostos, foram investigados 41 congêneres de PCBs em amostras de músculo congelado e de lombo cozido congelado de atum (Katsuwonus pelamis) provenientes da indústria de pescado de Rio Grande/RS. As amostras foram extraídas por Soxhlet, purificadas, fracionadas e analisadas por cromatografia de fase gasosa com detecção por captura de elétrons (CG-DCE). O somatório das concentrações dos PCBs analisados nas amostras variou de 0,58 a 95 ng.g -1 (peso lipídico). Apesar de os resultados indicarem a presença de congêneres de PCBs em todas as amostras de atum (Katsuwonus pelamis), os valores estavam abaixo do limite estabelecido pela legislação da União Europeia para produtos de origem animal (200 ng.g -1 peso lipídico). No Brasil, o limite é de 3.000 ng.g -1 (peso lipídico). A comparação entre os valores detectados revelou que as amostras processadas possuíam maiores concentrações de PCBs e que o manuseio do pescado pode ser um fator que influência na concentração final do contaminante. ABSTRACTIn order to identify a possible contamination by polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and to evaluate the effect of the fish processing upon the residue contents of these compounds, 41 PCBs congeners were investigated in samples of frozen muscle and frozen cooked loin of tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) from a fishery industry of Rio Grande/RS. Samples were extracted by Sohxlet, purified, fractionated and analyzed by gas chromatography with electron capture detector (GC-ECD). The PCBs concentrations in the analyzed samples ranged from 0.58 to 95 ng.g -1 (lipid weight). Although the results indicated the occurrence of PCBs congeners in all of tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) samples, the contents were lower than the maximum value established by the European Union legislation for products from animal origin (up to 200 ng.g -1 lipid weight). In Brazil, the maximum permitted contents is 3000 ng.g -1 (lipid weight). The comparison among the detected amounts evidenced that the processed samples showed higher concentrations of PCBs; thus, the fish processing might be a factor which cause effect on the final contaminant concentration.
