The passive to convergent margin transition along western Laurentia drove early development of the North American Cordillera and culminated with the Late Devonian-Mississippian Antler orogeny and emplacement of the Roberts Mountain allochthon in the western United States. New detrital zircon studies in the Pioneer Mountains, east-central Idaho, were conducted to investigate the stratigraphic evidence of this transition and test models for mid-Paleozoic tectonics and paleogeography. Ordovician to Lower Devonian passive margin strata of the Roberts Mountain allochthon and adjacent North American parautochthon contain ca. 1850, 1920, 2080, and 2700 Ma detrital zircons that indicate provenance from the Peace River Arch region of northwestern Laurentia. These detrital zircons are much older than the depositional ages of their host rocks and probably record long-term sediment recycling processes along the Cordilleran margin. Upper Devonian strata, including Frasnian turbidites of the Roberts Mountain allochthon, document the incursion of 450-430 Ma and 1650-930 Ma detrital zircons from an unknown source to the west. Detrital zircon Hf isotope results suggest that the western source was an early Paleozoic arc built on Proterozoic crust, with the Eastern Klamath, Northern Sierra, and Quesnellia terranes as likely candidates. Lower Mississippian syntectonic strata filled a rapidly subsiding, releasing bend basin that was associated with sinistral-oblique plate convergence and reworking of lower Paleozoic rocks in east-central Idaho. The available detrital zircon and stratigraphic data are most consistent with noncollisional models for the Antler orogeny, including scenarios that feature the north to south, time-transgressive juxtaposition of Baltican-and Caledonian-affinity terranes along the Cordilleran margin.

We present a U-Pb detrital zircon age and provenance study of a sequence of metasedimentary rocks in the northwestern Thor-Odin high-grade gneiss dome within the Omineca crystalline belt of the Canadian Cordillera. Despite strong overprint by defor mation and metamorphism, we successfully analyzed the age and provenance of six samples collected at various structural levels, using U-Pb detrital zircon laser-ablationinductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) analysis.The Thor-Odin dome consists of Paleoproterozoic basement and a metasedimentary cover sequence of previously unknown age and tectonic signifi cance. Our results indicate that the oldest units of this sequence may be Paleoproterozoic, and some of the oldest known metasedimentary rocks in the Canadian Cordillera, originally deposited on top of Laurentian basement rocks. The youngest rocks are Devonian and deposited shortly before the onset of widespread Late Devonian to early Mississippian igneous activity in the Selkirk Domain or Kootenay arc. The cover sequence of the Thor-Odin dome thus preserves some of both the oldest and the youngest (meta)sedimentary rocks deposited between the formation of supercontinent Columbia and the onset of igneous activity and convergence that marked the beginning of Cordilleran deformation and metamorphism. Parts of as many as ~1.4 b.y. of sedimentary history are preserved in the Thor-Odin dome, implying that much information on the sedimentary history of the Canadian Cordillera may be hidden in other Cordi lleran gneiss domes.

The palaeogeographic attribution of the Schlieren Flysch and its counterparts in the Gurnigel Nappe is still a matter of debate. These Late Alpine deepsea trench deposits show a variable tectonic thrust relationship with other nappes inferring either an Ultrahelvetic or South Penninic origin of the elongated trench basin. An improved knowledge of the supplying source terranes of the Schlieren Flysch basin may add to the palaeogeographic ascription. Detrital zircons from seven representative samples have been dated by laser ablation ICP-MS analysis methods. The obtained age patterns are compared with standard provenance analysis methods including modal grain and heavy mineral statistics of the sandstones. The detrital zircons show two major populations of Pan-African (ca. 650-450 Ma) and Variscan (ca. 360-320 Ma) ages. A low abundance of Devonian detrital zircons separates the two main age populations. The Th/U signature of the zircons implies that igneous rocks of these two orogenic cycles directly, or indirectly (by multicyclic reworking of zircons) have strongly contributed to the clastic input. The earlier described bimodal turbiditic supply to the Schlieren Flysch basin is matched by the geochronologic data. With regard to the other petrographic signatures of the sandstones, it becomes evident that the granitic-rhyolitic source terrane derived (K-feldspar bearing) sandstones show a higher abundance of Pan-African zircons and a higher abundance of tourmaline in the heavy mineral fractions. In contrast, the exclusively plagioclase-bearing sandstones from the tonalitic-andesitic source contain a majority of Variscan zircons and higher contents of apatite. In addition, we observe a third minor population comprising TriassicEarly Jurassic detrital zircons. The correlation of the obtained detrital zircon ages with pre-Cretaceous igneous, metamorphic and geodynamic events, which affected the basement of the northern and southern margins of the Alpine Tethys reveals a major difference by the presence of Triassic magmatic products and volcaniclastics in South Alpine and Austroalpine units. The discovery of the minor Triassic-Early Jurassic population in both sandstone types of the Schlieren Flysch would argue for the derivation of the clastic material from the southern Alpine Tethys or Adriatic-Apulian margin.
