Source‐to‐sink system studies in oil fields are especially important for optimizing the favourable oil‐gas areas; however, this basin‐mountain interaction process is particularly complicated in intermontane basins. In this study, detrital zircon U–Pb dating of 8 new and 3 published samples from throughout the Jurassic in the central Turpan Basin (TB) are combined with collected heavy mineral data to investigate the evolution of the source‐to‐sink system and reconstruct the filling process of this intermontane basin from the Lower to Upper Jurassic. Based on the detrital zircon ages and heavy mineral assemblage, the filling rocks mainly weathered from Mesozoic, Palaeozoic and Precambrian volcanic and metamorphic rocks in the Tian Shan (TS) area, and the source‐to‐sink systems in the basin show a clear alteration corresponding to the uplift of the surrounding mountains during the Jurassic. In the Lower Jurassic, the uplifted central and northern TS was the main provenance and shed the most source rocks northward, and the gentle positive relief of the Bogda Mountains (BM), the northern boundary of the TB, was a secondary provenance and provided limited material to the northern area. In the early Middle Jurassic, these provenances did not alter much, but in the later Middle Jurassic, uplift of the western BM began and provided some extreme new source rocks with detrital zircon ages of approximately 159–172 Ma. In the Upper Jurassic, the considerably uplifted BM became the main provenance, while the still gently uplifted central and northern TS became the secondary provenance.

Wind is one of the major processes modifying the land surface in the Hami Basin, as evidenced by wind deflation gravel lags, yardangs, and gravel mantled eolian ripples. We report erosion rates for the Hami Basin using cosmogenic 10Be measurements. Bedrock erosion rates average 0.121 ± 0.0293 mm yr−1, which is similar to those of other wind‐eroded arid basins in East Asia, but is anomalously low when modern near‐surface wind speeds are considered. We posit that interglacial periods experienced lower erosion rates than glacial periods, and that the Hami Basin was likely once a larger dust producer than at present, with Pleistocene dust emissions driven by the eolian deflation of alluvial terrace deposits as well as bedrock weathering and abrasion. Wind erosion and dust production in the Hami Basin was largely regulated by the synoptically controlled spatial‐temporal distribution of precipitation and subsequent landscape evolution since at least the late Pleistocene.

The Harlik Mountain is in the easternmost part of the Tian Shan and is a prime example of an intracontinental orogenic belt. Several studies have used low‐temperature thermochronology to understand the uplift history of this range. However, complicated structures have a profound impact on the study of the tectonic evolution of the Harlik Mountain during the Mesozoic‐Cenozoic. Here, we refine the structural characteristics of the Harlik Mountain and then acquire the detailed thermal histories in different parts of the range. Through field observations, we demonstrate that the brittle Harlik Fault experienced two activities, including early normal faulting and late right‐lateral strike‐slip normal faulting. In particular, geomorphic and river analyses indicate that the topography of the Harlik Mountain was significantly influenced by faults. Combined with the thermochronological data from previous studies, thermal history modelling based on our new data on the Harlik Mountain suggest three fast cooling phases in the 128–110 Ma, 70–55 Ma, and 50–35 Ma. The first and the third cooling phases were associated with fault activities and the second cooling phase was related to regional denudation. The first phase of faulting, in the late Early Cretaceous, may be caused by stress relaxation after the Cimmerian collision. The second phase of faulting was likely to relate to local stress adjustment from the India‐Eurasia collision during the Eocene to Oligocene. Moreover, Late Cretaceous to Palaeocene regional cooling was probably affected by the collision of the Karakoram Block with Eurasia.
