Detrital zircon geochronology analysis of the Late Mesozoic deposition in the Turpan‐Hami basin: Implications for the uplift history of the Eastern Tian Shan, north‐western China

Abstract: Analysing the provenance changes of synorogenic sediments in the Turpan‐Hami basin by detrital zircon geochronology is an efficient tool to examine the uplift and erosion history of the easternmost Tian Shan. We present detrital zircon U‐Pb analysis from nine samples that were collected within marginal lacustrine Middle‐Late Jurassic and aeolian‐fluvial Early Cretaceous strata in the basin. Middle‐Early Jurassic (159–172 Ma) zircons deriving from the southern Junggar dominated the Middle Jurassic sample from t… Show more

“…In J 2À3 , the detrital zircon ages decrease suddenly with an extremely new age compared to other formation samples (Table 2; 158-172 Ma; Y. Fang et al, 2019;Shen et al, 2020). These ages are similar to that of volcanic activity that occurred in the southern Junggar Basin and BM during the Middle Jurassic (168 Ma; Y.…”

“…These Jurassic detrital zircon ages imply new magmatic activity around this time, which was only found in the western BM and Junggar Basin area (Y. Fang et al, 2019;Shen et al, 2020;Yang et al, 2013). Thus, during the later Middle Jurassic, the western BM and/or Junggar Basin area may also have supplied some source rocks according to detrital zircon age characteristics.…”

“…N = 11 bedrock samples were collected from 5 sites through a yardang field in the Hami Basin for cosmogenic 10 Be analysis (Figure 2). Sampling focused on Mesozoic strata sculpted into yardangs, which were medium‐ to coarse‐grained sandstones (Greene et al., 2005; Shen et al., 2020; Wang et al., 2017). Samples were collected within two centimeters of the erosional surface, and all but one (D8724) were located atop yardangs, thus avoiding large corrections for shielding.…”

“…Furthermore, the northernmost Harlik Mountain also experienced the same normal faulting event. Previous research on provenance transitions in the Hami Basin to the south provides evidence for the denudation of the Harlik Mountain since the Early Cretaceous (Shen et al, 2020).…”
