Detrimental Effects of Capacitors in Distribution Networks in the Presence of Harmonic Pollution

Abstract: The main goal of this paper is to analyze the behavior of an electric power network in the presence of harmonic distortion, when capacitors are installed. The work starts from a case study, where failure and malfunctioning of an industrial plant are described with the help of experimental measurements. The theoretical and mathematical details of the phenomena involved are analyzed by suitable computer simulations. The study is performed by considering some important electrical quantities, evaluated according t… Show more

“…References [14ā€“17] paid attention to reactive power compensation in distribution networks. The authors in [14] are investigates applying a capacitorā€less distribution static synchronous compensator for reactive power compensation and harmonic relaxation.…”

“…The backward/forward sweepā€based harmonic load flow is expanded to the quick and exact solution for capacitor compensated distribution networks by the authors [15]. In [16] the authors are focused on a problem associated with the capacitor effects in power systems considering harmonic distortion. Also, reference [17] studies the voltage and current harmonics injected by largeā€scale renewable DG resources in distribution networks.…”

“…On the other hand, power electronic devices, as in the case of voltage source converters, switch-mode power supplies, power electronic converters and fluorescent lights (with electronic ballasts), which are some kind of power electronic devices [18][19][20]. The distortions in the power network can influence negatively the functions of some equipment, making them respond in an unpredicted manner when subjected to multiple frequencies [21][22][23][24]. Due to this fact methods to monitoring the sources of harmonics system have been developed to quantify/qualify the effects of the distortion in the system [25][26][27][28][29].…”
