Detrimental Effect of Perceived Controlling Behavior from Physical Education Teachers on Students’ Leisure-Time Physical Activity Intentions and Behavior: An Application of the Trans-Contextual Model

Abstract: In the present study, a trans-contextual model was applied to examine the relations between students’ perceptions of controlling behavior from teachers, frustration over their basic psychological needs, autonomous motivation toward physical activity in a physical education context, autonomous motivation toward physical activity in an out-of-school context, beliefs and intentions toward future physical activity, and actual participation in physical activity outside of school. We adopted a three-wave prospective… Show more

“…Along the same lines, Koka et al [94] demonstrated, through a model of structural equations, that the perception of controlling behaviours by the students negatively affected the amount of physical activity carried out in leisure time. More recently [95], they demonstrated a negative relationship between controlling behaviours by PE teacher with the intention and participation of the student to carry out physical activity outside of school.…”

“…The non-significant Little's [48] test indicated that the data were missing completely at random (χ2 = 990.631, df = 950, p = 0.175). Since missing values inhibit structural equation modelling based on maximum likelihood estimation with 5000 bootstrap samples, which would be used later in the statistical analysis in AMOS, missing values had to be replaced [49][50][51]. Therefore, the Expectation Maximization algorithm was used to impute missings.…”
