“…These issues could have been even greater in this study because the interviews took place in the participants’ private homes and the interviewer had to be very focused to collect the perspectives. Nevertheless, Ratnam and Drozdzewski (2020) filmed the walk-along interviews conducted in home environments of Sri Lankan refugees, which allowed them to capture the walking routes, sensory aspects of the environment as well as the body language of the participants as they were sharing their stories. Yet, the authors do not discuss the ethical issues raised by this method.…”

“…Finlay and Bowman (2017), for their part, used it in residential settings of elderly people living autonomously, as well as in their neighbourhoods. Ratnam and Drozdzewski (2020) also used this method in home environments with Sri Lankan refugees in Australia. Moreover, walking interviews can be combined with other methods.…”

“…Moreover, go-along interviews allowed for participants to respond to visual and sensory cues, which acted as instigator for conversations, offering real-time access to participants' experiences of and practices in place (Burns et al, 2020). An important strength of walk-along interviews for this study was also the opportunity to explore movement away from assumed trajectories, here the official trails, and what prompted such detours, as discussed by Ratnam and Drozdzewski (2020).…”

“…As such, most people, but especially older adults and other groups prone to severe illness due to a COVID-19 infection, were limited to the confines of their homes, thus limiting their movement and capabilities (Meijering, 2021 ). This stillness within the home, crucially, is not a fixed sedentary or immobile state (see Ratnam and Drozdzewski ( 2020 ) on indoor mobilities, for instance), but is an experience that opens up new movements and agencies. For example, Martin ( 2011 ) and Cocker ( 2009 ) have shown that moments of sudden stillness have the potential to open a space for individuals to reflect and (re)assess their role and patterns of personal functionings – if they choose to: ‘stillness presents a break or pause in the flow of habitual events, whilst illuminating temporal gaps and fissures within which alternative, even unexpected possibilities – for life – might emerge’ (Cocker, 2009 , p. 87).…”
