Deterministic vs. Random Modulated Interference on G3 Power Line Communication

Abstract: Power line communication (PLC), which is often used in advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), may be disturbed by adjacent high-power converters. Due to the inherent features of this type of communication, classic methods of improving communication reliability (filtration and circuit separation) cannot be fully applied. Information coding (modulation) methods are used in PLC to increase the data transfer rate and improve noise immunity. Random modulations (RanM) are used in converters to lower emission levels… Show more

“…Also, the source of the noise in the G3-PLC network in the United States powerlines has been studied in Razazian et al (2011). Recently, the focus of the research on the physical layer has been shifted towards meeting the required Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of the G3-PLC (Beshir et al, 2021;El Sayed et al, 2021aSayed et al, 2021a;Sayed et al, 2021b), as more power electronic devices have been connected to the PLC channel causing electromagnetic interference (EMI) in the 9 to 150 kHz band.…”

“…In [13], the comparison between the deterministic and random modulation effects on the G3-PLC performance in terms of Frame Error Rate (FER) is presented. In that work, only one type of RPWM scheme, i.e., Random Frequency Modulation (RFM), is considered and it was found causing more FER than the deterministic modulation.…”

“…Therefore, it is important to mitigate the emissions of power converters [11]. One of the methods used to reduce the converter's emissions is using randomized modulation [12,13]. Conventional modulation techniques have high harmonic contents due to the fixed on/off duty cycle.…”

“…Conventional modulation techniques have high harmonic contents due to the fixed on/off duty cycle. Therefore, random modulation is preferred as it can change the density of the spectral power to reduce the harmonic property [13]. Thus, random modulation is used in many applications such as machine torque ripples reduction and lowering the acoustic noise [14].…”
