Deterministic models of minority neutral particle kinetics close to a catalytic surface, based on the formalism of radiative transfer

Abstract: The kinetics of neutral particles diluted in a gas or plasma and reacting with a catalytic surface can be calculated accurately only by taking into account the finite value of the mean free path. In reactor models, this problem is usually solved by using reaction-diffusion equations, but this approximation is not always appropriate. As an alternative, Monte Carlo (MC) simulations are used, but they are affected by the noxious problem of statistical error. We propose to address this problem by using the formali… Show more

“…The setting of the neutrals transport problem as a ray tracing problem also has another advantage: it is possible, and it was demonstrated in a recent publication (Longo et al 2019), to take advantage from the formal analogy between the transport problem of neutral particles and RT theory in order to reformulate, under certain symmetry conditions, the transport problem in a particularly convenient integral form, i.e. a generalization of the Schwarzschild-Milne equation, which include terms describing the chemical reactions in the gas phase and the catalytic properties of the reactor wall.…”
