Determining the variables associated to clean intermittent self-catheterization adherence rate: one-year follow-up study

Abstract: Purpose: To determine adherence rate and variables associate with patients' adherence to Clean Intermittent Self Catheterization (CISC). Materials and Methods: Patients refereed to CISC training program between July 2006 and May 2008, were prospectively evaluated with urodynamic, 3 days bladder diary (BD) and WHOQoL-bref questionnaire. After training to perform CISC, patients were evaluated at 2 weeks, monthly for 6 months and at 12 months with clinical visits and BD. Patients were considered adherent if they … Show more

“…Despite involving a learning phase and patient adherence, ISC is considered simple and straightforward. 22 Van Achterberg et al. 23 highlighted the importance of psychological factors and emphasized the need to identify lack of knowledge of the technique, fears and feelings of shame associated with urinary catheters.…”

“…15 Girotti et al identified female gender, neurogenic voiding function and age less than 40 years as factors predicting strong adherence to ISC, while about half of evaluated male patients and patients with nonneurogenic bladder were noncompliant. 16 …”

“…Several studies from centers that practice CISC have shown that a younger age also positively influenced adherence to CISC 13,14. Similarly, in reviewing the success rate of intermittent self-catheterization among 309 patients with a mean age of 62 years, Parsons et al recorded a success rate of 86% for patients younger than 65 years and 82% for those 65 years and older 15…”
