Determining the Critical Particle Size to Induce Enhanced Emission in Aggregates of a Highly Twisted Triarylamine

Abstract: Towards highly luminescent aggregates: A highly twisted triphenylamine displays aggregation-induced enhanced emission. A solvent-specific critical molecular aggregate size, once reached, gives rapid onset of enhanced emission in polar solvent mixtures that favor quenching of solvated individual molecule excited states.

“…The triarylamine derivative 213 is another example of AIEgens with an anthracenyl element (Figure 47). 271 Luminogen 213 can be taken as an analogue of TPA where one of the phenyl rings is replaced with an anthracene unit. The anthracenyl moiety can be mainly viewed as a large stator; however, in some sense it can also act as a bulky rotor.…”

“…This aggregation induced blue-shifted emission (AIBSE) phenomenon has also been found in other AIEgens systems38. When the AIE molecules aggregate together, the effective polarity experienced by the luminogenic molecules in the microenvironment is reduced, which results in a blue shift of the emitted light32, 39. Likewise, we chose the 405 nm laser to excite AIEgens microbeads and nanobeads, and high fluorescent AIEgens microbeads and nanobeads were observed under the excitation of 405 nm laser.…”

“…For S2 , four DSA moieties were distributed on the outside of the rhombic skeleton and exhibited a high degree of freedom. It is hypothesized that by the addition of H 2 O, the individual assembly gathers together to form microaggregates, thereby providing an internal hydrophobic environment to reduce the CT effect and subsequently resulting in the blue shift of the emission band of S2 . , In addition, we also explored the electronic transitions in the excited states of ligands and metallacycles through time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations (Figures S50–S52). Tables S1–S3 and Figure S45 show the relative fluorescence quantum yields (Φ F ) of the two metallacycles with different H 2 O contents.…”
