Determining Key Ecological Indicators for Urban Land Consolidation

Abstract: abstraCt. urban land consolidation, which reforms land parcels to remove fragmentation and produce ideal blocks, is an effective means of urban renewal. successful urban land consolidation benefits city officials as well as the general public, in improved city image, increased land value, and more effective land use. However, urban land consolidation can be ecologically detrimental to the environment, while land consolidation has focused solely on development for human benefit. To remove the negative effects o… Show more

“…ULC projects are mostly associated with land use, infrastructure construction, and industrial development, which have been found to bring significant impacts on the urban industry and ecological environmental system [13] [34]. Based on the framework of land consolidation proposed by Shan et al [35], the factors that immediate affect the urban development mainly include the status of economy, ecology, and society: (1) as for economy, project implementation and economic output can stimulate industry expansion and personal income growth [16] [36]; (2) as for ecology, project implementation and facility utilization can improve land use rate and may affect the properties of soil, water and biology [17][20] [37][38]; (3) as for society, project implementation and industry change can increase jobs and promote transportation convenience. Meantime, public acceptance and policy support are also key factors of ULC [18].…”

“…The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) proposed by Saaty (1980) is a widely used decision making analysis tool for modeling unstructured problems in political, economic, social, and management sciences (Levary, Wan 1998;Chang 1996;Tupenaite et al 2010;Lin 2010;Cheng et al 2011;Ergu et al 2011b;Wu et al 2010;Medineckienė, Björk 2011). Pair-wise comparison is an important part in AHP, completed by the experts (Kamal, Al-Subhi 2001;Liu, Shih 2005).…”

“…After entering the 21st century, land consolidation not only greatly improved its standards and scale but also focused on the integration of ecology, art, and humanities [27,28]. Meanwhile, the research scope of land remediation also broadens from rural areas to urban areas [29]. The main purpose of urban land remediation is to promote urban renewal.…”

“…The selected indicators of social impact include changes in farmers' values, motivations and behavior, a personal and social conflict between innovation and values, and population density [38]. The selected indicators of environmental impact should cover important ecological, human welfare and sustainable concerns, specific include the effects of land consolidation on biodiversity, nature conservation and landscape improvement, energy and water resource use and management, land-use change, and the degree of response of administrations to ecological problems [29,38]. Johansen et al proposed a novel indicator-based approach to assess the collective impact of multifunctional land consolidation to apply land consolidation for increasing the multifunctionality of the landscape.…”
