Determining If Sex Bias Exists in Human Surgical Clinical Research

Abstract: Importance Sex is a variable that is poorly controlled for in clinical research. Objective Determine if sex bias exists in human surgical clinical research, determine if data are reported and analyzed using sex as an independent variable, and identify specialties where the greatest and least sex biases exist. Design Review and data abstraction from published peer-reviewed manuscripts. Setting All original peer-reviewed manuscripts published in 2011 and 2012 in Annals of Surgery, American Journal of Surge… Show more

“…Several fields, from basic and translational science to clinical research, have done analysis of published data for this exact purpose . A recent study demonstrated sex bias in the general surgery literature and called for improvements in national policy to address this disparity . As no similar assessment of sex in published data exists for the field of otolaryngology, the purpose of this study was to characterize the sex distribution and sex data handling in published otolaryngology research.…”

“…As previously described in many scientific disciplines, bibliometric and scientometric analysis are relevant to monitor research, using various bibliometric tools and visualizing techniques such as density‐equalizing mapping (DEMP), that allow to analyze the quantity and quality of publications. The assessment of the quantity and quality of research in a specific field could improve its organization and promotion …”
