Some of them ana lyse a tem po ral se quence of the changes re corded in bioapatite from enamel lay ers rep re sent ing the whole pe riod of tooth de vel op ment. Enamel sam ples dis play large intra-tooth d 18 O vari a tions that may re flect a sea sonal fluc tu a tion in the d 18 O of lo cal palaeoclimate pa ram e ters. The pres ent pa per provides an ef fec tive an a lyt i cal pro to col for se quen tial d 18 O anal y sis of hu man teeth us ing SHRIMP IIe/MC ion microprobe. It is pos si ble to fol low the in ner enamel layer along enamel-dentine junc tion on a high spa tial scale in a range about 0.02 mm of spot di am e ter and 0.12-0.14 mm of the dis tance be tween spots. Us ing the meth od ol ogy de scribed herein, we can achieve an ex ter nal pre ci sion for d 18 O anal y sis <0.2‰ (1s). The num ber of 60 to 90 sin gle anal y ses cov er ing the enamel layer between the incisal and api cal ends is enough to ob tain tem po ral res o lu tion of less than one month and to doc u ment pre cisely sea sonal fluc tu a tion caused by lo cal en vi ron men tal and cli mate fac tors. The meth od ol ogy of d 18 O in situ mea sure ments has been tested on hu man teeth from Tell Majnuna, a 4th mil len nium BCE cem e tery in North ern Mes o po ta mia, which is a rel atively arid area with high sea sonal dif fer ences in pre cip i ta tion and tem per a ture. Ob served pat tern of d 18 O vari a tions is consis tent with ex pected sea sonal fluc tu a tions, al though the over all ef fect is blurred by some in er tia in the enamel mat u ra tion.Key words: palaeoclimate, bioapatite, hu man teeth, se quen tial microsampling, Mid dle East, Mes o po ta mia. Kimberlites and orangeites (previously named Group-II kimberlites) are small-volume igneous rocks occurring in diatremes, sills and dykes. They are the main hosts for diamonds and are of scientific importance because they contain fragments of entrained mantle and crustal rocks, thus providing key information about the subcontinental lithosphere. Orangeites are ultrapotassic, H 2 O and CO 2 -rich rocks hosting minerals such as phlogopite, olivine, calcite and apatite. The major, trace element and isotopic compositions of orangeites resemble those of intensely metasomatized mantle of the type represented by MARID (mica-amphibolerutile-ilmenite-diopside) xenoliths. Here we report new data for two MARID xenoliths from the Bultfontein kimberlite (Kimberley, South Africa) and we show that MARID-veined mantle has mineralogical (carbonate-apatite) and geochemical (Sr-Nd-Hf-O isotopes) characteristics compatible with orangeite melt generation from a MARID-rich source. This interpretation is supported by U-Pb zircon ages in MARID xenoliths from the Kimberley kimberlites, which confirm MARID rock formation before orangeite magmatism in the area.

Zircon U–Pb, O isotope, and geochemistry study of the early Palaeozoic granitic gneiss in the Dinggye district, central Himalaya: Implications for the early Palaeozoic orogenic event along the northern margin of Gondwana

To better constrain the evolution of the early Palaeozoic orogenesis along the northern margin of Gondwana, we present new petrological, geochronological, and geochemical studies of the Cambrian-Ordovician granitic gneiss in the Dinggye area, central Himalaya. The granitic gneiss is medium-coarse grained, with porphyritic, augen, banded, or gneissic structure, and has undergone strong deformation. The mineral assemblages are quartz, plagioclase, K-feldspar, muscovite, and biotite, with minor amounts of accessory minerals. The granitic gneiss samples are characterized by high SiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 , and Rb/Sr contents but low MgO, TiO 2 , FeO t , and MnO contents, with A/CNK of 1.08-1.38. The REE patterns of the granitic gneiss show high LREE/HREE and negative Eu anomalies. In the trace-element chondritenormalized diagram, the samples show enrichment in LILE (e.g., Rb, Th, U, and K) and depletion in some HFSEs (Nb and Ti). These features indicate that the protolith was a calc-alkaline and peraluminous S-type granite. Six analysed samples yielded zircon U-Pb crystallization ages between 480 and 500 Ma, which support the existence of the early Palaeozoic magmatism in the Dinggye area, central Himalaya. High δ 18 O values (7-10‰, >> a mantle value of 5.3 ± 0.6‰) of magmatic zircon domains and abundant inherited zircons with variable ages (558-2523 Ma) indicate that the magma was derived from a supracrustal source. Combined with whole-rock Sr-Nd data (average εNd(t) = −8.1) published previously, we suggest that the granitic gneiss originated from partial melting of old crust, most likely to be the sedimentary rocks of the Himalayan Crystalline Complex. The early Palaeozoic granitic gneiss with a continental arc affinity may have formed in an Andean-type orogeny involving subduction of the Proto-Tethyan Oceanic crust beneath the northern margin of the Gondwana supercontinent.
