Determining genetic combining ability, heterotic potential and gene action for yield contributing traits and Yellow Vein Mosaic Virus (YVMV) resistance in Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus(L.) Monech.)

Abstract: Breeding for resistance to biotic stress and higher yield is a continuous process. Thus, the identification of desirable parents with good combining ability and nature of gene action for the target trait is of utmost importance. Hence, in this present investigation, 10 lines and three testers of Okra were crossed in line × tester mating design to generate 30 testcross progenies and their evaluation along with parents and check in a randomized complete block design with three replications. To depict the true pi… Show more

“…Similarly, VRO-6 × Pusa A-4 considered as one of the best hybrid for both ascorbic acid and sugar percentage and DOV-62 × Pusa Bhindi-5 for both ascorbic acid and total phenolic content. Moreover, involvement of minimum one good combiner parent was found in all the above testcross combinations which reflected that heterosis was governed by the action of both additive and non-additive genetic components (Das et al 2020a, Das et al 2020b, Chandel et al 2022. In future, these For total phenol, DOV-62 × Pusa Bhindi-5 was found as best hybrid on the basis of HBP, HMP, and HSP.…”

“…Being a cross pollinated crop, it has a high level of genetic diversity (Duggi et al, 2013), making it important to evaluate the germplasm for genetic variability as the first step in okra improvement (Singh et al, 2012). The second step is to generate crosses using a suitable mating design, to understand the extent of heterosis for various economic traits and the inheritance pattern of desired characters (Das et al, 2020). Yield is a pivotal trait in both okra cultivars and hybrids, prompting extensive endeavours have been undertaken to enhance yield, production and quality characteristics (Singh et al, 2017).…”

“…In order to overcome such problems, cultivated line as a resistant source can be used to develop the resistant variety. Keeping this fact in mind the newly developed YVMV-resistant cultivar Pusa Bhindi-5 at IARI, New Delhi, has been utilized to work out the inheritance of YVMV resistance in okra, so that subsequently, this line can be utilized in a breeding program to develop resistant varieties/hybrids (Das et al, 2020). Many times, through phenotype-based screening in field or greenhouse screening, a plant that is a symptomless carrier of a virus goes undetected.…”
