Determining external film mass transfer coefficients for adsorption columns

Abstract: Radcliffe et al. (1982), while presenting a method for determining the external film mass transfer coefficient k, by the analysis of initial breakthrough concentrations, stated that external film mass transfer dominates mass transfer behavior during the early portion of breakthrough curves obtained from fixed-bed adsorbers. It is important, however, to define the conditions under which their assumptions and their method are valid, as will be discussed in this note. DevelopmentThe solute continuity equation for… Show more

“…Many techniques to determine the effective intraparticle diffusivity (D S ) and liquid film mass transfer coefficient (k F ) have been proposed [1][2][3][4][5], such as fixed bed breakthrough curves [1,4,6], Completely Mixed Batch Reactor (CMBR) method [2,3,5,7] and shallow bed technique [5,8]. One of the most commonly used techniques is the Mass Transfer Zone (MTZ) method [6].…”
