Hand tracking enables controller-free interaction with virtual environments, which can, compared to traditional handheld controllers, make virtual reality (VR) experiences more natural and immersive. As naturalness hinges on both technological and user-based features, fine-tuning the former while assessing the latter can be used to increase usability. For a grab-and-place use case in immersive VR, we compared a prototype of a camera-based hand tracking interface (Leap Motion) with customized design elements to the standard Leap Motion application programming interface (API) and a traditional controller solution (Oculus Touch). Usability was tested in 32 young healthy participants, whose performance was analyzed in terms of accuracy, speed and errors as well as subjective experience. We found higher performance and overall usability as well as overall preference for the handheld controller compared to both controller-free solutions. While most measures did not differ between the two controller-free solutions, the modifications made to the Leap API to form our prototype led to a significant decrease in accidental drops. Our results do not support the assumption of higher naturalness for hand tracking but suggest design elements to improve the robustness of controller-free object interaction in a grab-and-place scenario.

On Rotation Gains Within and Beyond Perceptual Limitations for Seated VR

Head tracking in head-mounted displays (HMDs) enables users to explore a 360-degree virtual scene with free head movements. However, for seated use of HMDs such as users sitting on a chair or a couch, physically turning around 360-degree is not possible. Redirection techniques decouple tracked physical motion and virtual motion, allowing users to explore virtual environments with more flexibility. In seated situations with only head movements available, the difference of stimulus might cause the detection thresholds of rotation gains to differ from that of redirected walking. Therefore we present an experiment with a two-alternative forced-choice (2AFC) design to compare the thresholds for seated and standing situations. Results indicate that users are unable to discriminate rotation gains between 0.89 and 1.28, a smaller range compared to the standing condition. We further treated head amplification as an interaction technique and found that a gain of 2.5, though not a hard threshold, was near the largest gain that users consider applicable. Overall, our work aims to better understand human perception of rotation gains in seated VR and the results provide guidance for future design choices of its applications.

It is generally accepted that the use of natural interaction provides a positive impact in Virtual Reality (VR) applications. Therefore, it is important to understand what is the best way to integrate and visualize this feature in VR. For this reason, this paper presents a comparative study of the integration of natural hand interaction in two immersive VR systems: a Cave Audio Visual Experience (CAVE) system –where users’ real hands are visible– and a non-see-through Head-Mounted Display (HMD) system –where only a virtual representation of the hands is possible–. In order to test the suitability of using this type of interaction in a CAVE and compare it to an HMD, we raise six research questions related to task performance, usability and perception differences regarding natural hand interaction with these two systems. To answer these questions, we designed an experiment where users have to complete a pick-and-place task with virtual balls and a text-typing task with virtual keyboards. In both systems, the same tracking technology, based on a Leap Motion device, was used. To the best of our knowledge this is the first academic work addressing a comparison of this type. Objective and subjective data were collected during the experiments. The results show that the HMD has a performance, preference and usability advantage over the CAVE with respect to the integration of natural hand interaction. Nevertheless, the results also show that the CAVE system can be, as well, successfully used in combination with an optical hand tracking device.
