Determining arterial wave transit time from a single aortic pressure pulse in rats: vascular impulse response analysis

Abstract: Arterial wave transit time (τw) in the lower body circulation is an effective biomarker of cardiovascular risk that substantially affects systolic workload imposed on the heart. This study evaluated a method for determining τw from the vascular impulse response on the basis of the measured aortic pressure and an assumed triangular flow (Qtri). The base of the unknown Qtri was constructed with a duration set equal to ejection time. The timing of the peak triangle was derived using a fourth-order derivative of t… Show more

“…Two-month-old male Wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups: (1) NC ( n = 28), (2) type 1 DM ( n = 26), and (3) CKD ( n = 20) groups. Type 1 DM was induced using a single tail vein injection with 55 mg kg −1 of STZ (Sigma, St. Louis, MO, USA) in 0.1 M citrate buffer (pH 4.5; Sigma) [ 25 ]. The blood glucose level was determined using a SURESTEP Test Strip (Lifescan Inc., Milpitas, CA, USA) to confirm hyperglycemia.…”

“…All rats were provided ad libitum Purina chow and water and housed under 12-hour light:dark cycles. The experiments were conducted according to the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals , and our study protocol was approved by the Animal Care and Use Committee of National Taiwan University [ 25 ].…”

“…In this study, we used the measured aortic pressure and an assumed Q tri to determine the effects of ECLS on arterial wave properties and ventricular/arterial coupling in male Wistar rats. The construction of Q tri was derived from the fourth-order derivative of the measured aortic pressure wave 13,14,17 . The aortic input impedance ( Z i ) was calculated from the ratio of the ascending aortic pressure harmonics to the corresponding Q tri harmonics.…”

“…Replacing the unknown flow signal with a triangular wave shape ( Q tri ), they successfully resolved the measured aortic pressure wave into its components, P f and P b , to calculate the RM or RI. Chang et al (2017) elaborated this concept by determining the arterial τ w through vascular impulse response analysis. They discovered that the aortic impulse response is an effective method for the estimation of arterial τ w by using a single pressure pulse recording with an assumed Q tri .…”
