Determining and Presenting the Third Dimension of a City Centre: A Photogrammetric Approach

Abstract: The heights ofbuildings in the city centre of Glasgow have been measured by photogrammetric methods. A comparison of the heighting accuracy with ground checks obtained by the use of a reducing telemeter indicates the possibilities of achieving accurate results by means of photogrammetric instruments and methods. An attempt to present the third dimension of the city on paper has also been made with the Stereosimplex I I c and the Perspektomat coupled together to,form a drawing system. I t is hoped that this app… Show more

“…THE USE of a photogrammetric approach in urban studies facilitates rapid extraction of accurate qualitative and quantitative data, especially in relation to the morphology of the built environment, for subsequent analysis (Lo, 1970(Lo, , 1971(Lo, , 1973. A further extension of this approach naturally leads to the development of an information system based on a photogrammetric plotter and the availability of an electronic computer, so that a greater degree of flexibility in data analysis can be achieved.…”

“…Lo was a prolific scholar and author with numerous publications which had appeared in some premier photogrammetric, remote sensing, geographic information science and geography journals (see, for example, Lo, 1970, 1978, 1981, 1987 in The Photogrammetric Record ). He authored or co‐authored 11 books including major textbooks on remote sensing and geographic information systems ( Geographical Applications of Aerial Photography , David and Charles, 1976; Applied Remote Sensing , Longman, 1986 ; Concepts and Techniques in Geographic Information Systems , Prentice Hall, 2002, 2007) that have been adopted by many universities.…”
