Determining an Effective UV Radiation Exposure Time for Vitamin D Synthesis in the Skin Without Risk to Health: Simplified Estimations from UV Observations

Abstract: UV radiation contains erythemally weighted UV, as well as UV that synthesizes vitamin D 3 . Here, we attempted to determine the relationship between these factors by numerical simulation of atmospheric parameters, such as total ozone, using a simplified "SMART2" model for radiative transfer. Both forms of UV were almost linearly correlated with each other for a comparably large UV radiation exposure, larger than UV Index~1.6. If erythemally weighted UV, which carries a risk of sunburn, is known, the amount of … Show more

“…National Institute for Environmental Studies comments that getting exposure to UV ray for several (in summer) to several ten (in winter) minutes in Japan that will never reach 1 MED (Minimal Erythema Dose) for people with skin photo type III (Japanese people), will lead vitamin D synthesis while minimizing its harms [37]. And it provides in real-time the amount of vitamin D synthesized in the body at some locations in Japan on the web [38], based on the logics described by Miyauchi and Nakajima[39]. Individuals should also be informed of the benefits of UV rays when alerted about its risk, with the available information shown above.…”

“…This study is also the first study to measure and adjust irradiance to the preset target prior to each exposure to elucidate the effects of various low dosages of narrow-band UVB irradiation. Few existing studies measured irradiance before exposure, or used devices that could be adjusted to meet the preset target [31][32][33][34][35] . In addition, although many investigations have focused on the effects of UV irradiation dosage on vitamin D levels in vivo, some of them used irradiation that was much higher than SED, which makes further clinical applications as a "health lamp" less pragmatic 28,36 .…”
