Determining a priority order between thermic utilization processes for organic industrial waste with LCA

Abstract: The persistent organic pollutants (POPs) waste take the main place in the group of organic industrial waste and the residues of the POPs waste generated in the processes of the chemical industry. There are green chemistry methods and some other treatment approaches for decreasing the quantity of the organic industrial waste, but currently thermic treatment processes are the most popular alternatives. This paper summarises thermic utilisation processes with a comparison between the different technologies, stres… Show more

“…The results of the third stage of environmental analysis, i.e., grouping and weighing, were used to determine the environmental costs. Environmental coefficients are the result of this stage, and they are expressed in Pt (environmental points), which are aggregated units that make it possible to compare the results of the ecobalances herein [69,70]. One thousand environmental points are equal to the environmental impact of an average European during a year [65,71].…”

“…Hammer and disc mills yield the best results in terms of the grinding product quality, energy consumption, and efficiency [1,13]. The main goals of grinding granular biomass, as well as other energy materials (e.g., coal, wood), include the reduction of dimensions, the release of substances contained in the material structure, and an increase in the material-specific surface area so that the energy contained in its structure can be released faster [15][16][17][18]. In order to maximize the potential of ground raw materials, energy consumption during grinding (processing) should be as low as possible [19].…”

“…In the case of production and trade companies, life cycle assessment can be applied to the products themselves and can also address general problems. Their results can be used for the development of action plans, waste management strategies, and design modification to be later compared with other companies [4][5][6]. Companies are more and more frequently using life cycle assessment not only at the stage of product design, improvement, or the formulation of overall development strategies, but also for the object's entire life cycle management [7][8][9][10][11][12].…”
