We present a comparison of the computation of energy-energy correlation in e + e − collisions in the back-to-back region at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy matched with the next-to-next-to-leading order perturbative prediction to LEP, PEP, PETRA, SLC and TRISTAN data. With these predictions we perform an extraction of the strong coupling constant taking into account non-perturbative effects modelled with Monte Carlo event generators. The final result at NNLO+NNLL precision is α S (M Z ) = 0.11750 ± 0.00018(exp.) ± 0.00102(hadr.) ± 0.00257(ren.) ± 0.00078(res.).

We introduce a new event shape observable — event isotropy — that quantifies how close the radiation pattern of a collider event is to a uniform distribution. This observable is based on a normalized version of the energy mover’s distance, which is the minimum “work” needed to rearrange one radiation pattern into another of equal energy. We investigate the utility of event isotropy both at electron-positron colliders, where events are compared to a perfectly spherical radiation pattern, as well as at proton-proton colliders, where the natural comparison is to either cylindrical or ring-like patterns. Compared to traditional event shape observables like sphericity and thrust, event isotropy exhibits a larger dynamic range for high-multiplicity events. This enables event isotropy to not only distinguish between dijet and multijet processes but also separate uniform N-body phase space configurations for different values of N. As a key application of this new observable, we study its performance to characterize strongly-coupled new physics scenarios with isotropic collider signatures.

Using data from e + e − annihilation into hadrons, taken with the OPAL detector at LEP at the Z pole between 1991 and 1995, we performed a simultaneous measurement of the colour factors of the underlying gauge group of the strong interaction, C F and C A , and the strong coupling, α s . The measurement was carried out by fitting next-to-leading order perturbative predictions to measured angular correlations of 4-jet events together with multi-jet related variables. Our results, C A = 3.02 ± 0.25(stat.) ± 0.49(syst.) , C F = 1.34 ± 0.13(stat.) ± 0.22(syst.) , α s (M Z ) = 0.120 ± 0.011(stat.) ± 0.020(syst.) , provide a test of perturbative QCD in which the only assumptions are non-abelian gauge symmetry and standard hadronization models. The measurements are in agreement with SU(3) expectations for C F and C A and the world average of α s (M Z ).
