Determination of Zn in Dry Feeds for Cats and Dogs by Energy-Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry

Abstract: This work describes an analytical method for Zn determination in dry feeds for cats and dogs by energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF). Samples of dry feed were powdered and prepared in the form of pellets for direct analysis by EDXRF. The LOQ (10σ) was 0.4 mg/kg. The samples were also analyzed by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) as an independent comparative method. Application of a paired t-test showed no significant differences between Zn concentrations obtained by ED… Show more

“…The measurement uncertainty SD(u) provides the data confidence and the ultimate assessment of ED‐XRF capability. The complicated and lengthy bottom‐up approach of measurement uncertainty estimation from Eurachem could be replaced by the simplified one previously used based on the combination of combining precision and trueness using repeatability. Relative uncertainties are calculated using the following formula: RSD()uEDXRF=CV()rEDXRF20.5em+RSD()differencesEDXRF2. …”

“…The sample preparation is similar to those used in previous studies . Pellets (32‐mm diameter) were prepared using 6 g +/−0.1 g of homogenized powder pressed with under 10 to 17 tons, using a benchtop electro hydraulic press (max.…”

“…Although zinc content of ingredients is available in feed tables, several factors can influence the accuracy of those estimations, being advisable to routinely analyze the content of zinc in raw ingredients. However, that is still not current practice, probably because the analytical techniques require expertise and sophisticated equipment, which inevitably translates into high costs [84].…”
