Determination of Young’s Modulus by Specific Vibration of Basalt and Diabase

Abstract: The elasticity is an important parameter for the evaluation of the mechanical behavior of a rock mass and a fundamental factor in the definition of the resistance characteristics, stability, and blastability in rock blasts, and it is an important parameter for the blastability equations like the Kuz–Ram method. This paper presents a comparison of the Uniaxial Compression Method (UCM) and the Impulse Excitation Technique (IET) in determining Young’s modulus. The IET is a static and nondestructive dynamic method… Show more

“…The stress-strain curve does not always show a clear linear behavior with all kinds of materials, hence a single value of the Young's modulus is sometimes hard to calculate. This fact redirected the interest to the non-destructive methods which give better results regarding the elastic range [9]. K.T.…”

“…They found out that the dynamic Young's moduli had higher values than the static moduli by approximately 16% for IET and 28% for UPV. Using IET, Quaglio et al [2] determined Young's modulus of samples from basalt and diabase mines used as aggregates in the construction industry. Their results showed that values of Young's modulus had high repeatability and agreed with those reported in the literature for the same material.…”
